Pretty soon, GP/PQ is also going to be a hub for law firms in DC. Hopefully this will encourage even more great restaurants and luxury shops/amenities to also move into the area.

In other Top 100 law firm news: Alston + Bird just moved into 950 F St, and Dewey Ballantine just moved into 975 F St.

what happened to the grocery store movement?

tom: thanks for the info!

rr446: It is basically dead in the water.

Alston + Bird has been in that location for over 18 monhts. Dewey Ballantine is a more recent move (maybe 4 months ago).

With DLA Piper’s DC office (the firm’s second largest office) also moving into the new office building across from the Hotel Monaco, we’ve got a slew more lawyers heading downtown. These new firm locations all add to the existing base of Venable, DOJ ENRD, K&H, W&C and many others.

If we get more of these folks to move downtown to eliminate their commute times we’ll have even greater support and demand for a grocery store and other critical residential needs.

Yes, but more lawyers as neighbors often also leads to more superfluous litigation against neighboring businesses — ’cause it’s not like the cosy, perfect suburbs left behind. Or creates lots of empty units which are used a few times a month when an overnight work project pops up. I live in a building that is thankfully rid of the litigious lawyers — but the 1/4 empty building remains and often makes me feel a little sad that I have few neighbors.

Should stabalize property values though – they don’t exactly make minimum wage :)

I agree with the first comment — high end lawyers draw high end services. And I wouldn’t worry about them picking on local businesses. In my experience, attorneys at Vault 100 firms aren’t (as a group) really likely to initiate petty lawsuits. Their time is too valuable and way too scarce.

Do lawyers even go to grocery stores? I thought they just ate out every night.

Even if they did push for a grocery, it would be Dean & Deluca-luxury foodstuffs.

Cadwalader or most other lawyers will not be picking fights with small businesses or raising petty issues to litigate. Lawyers at large firms have to go through numerous conflict checks and receive many committee approvals before instituting such an action on their own. It’s not worth the time.

As for eating out, here’s the usual weekday roundup…Oceanaire, TOSCA, Caucus Room, Mortons and Capital Grille. The butlers are usually sent for grocery trips. Give me a break.

My wife is an attorney at one of the firms mentioned. We love being PQ residents, but I have to say most of her colleagues (and most attorneys at top area firms) are commuters. Incidentally, we’ve been lobbying for a neighborhood grocery (any grocery) for well over a year, despite the fact that we’ve never actually used our kitchen.

Jeez, not more grocery store talk. WE’RE GETTING A GROCERY STORE, PEOPLE. It’s called SAFEWAY and will be in the City Vista complex.

Comment by Anonymous on July 23, 2007 @ 11:51 am

Annon…

Is teh Safeway in the Penn Quarter or Gallery Place? NO! It is not.

Anon@11:51,

Oh, it’s across one of those Magical Lines that constitute the engraved-in-stone (drum roll) Penn Quarter. Never mind how close it is, right (5th & K streets)?

If it were instead somewhere along 15th street (say F or G streets), that would be better, right, because it would be inside one of those Magical Lines albeit much farther?

I think this illustrates perfectly how illogical all this talk is about “getting a grocery store,” even though one is being built right under your noses.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
