Central Souvenirs
Reader C. sent in a tip that the old Central Liquors space (917 F ST NW) will become another souvenir shop. We stopped by and sure enough the windows are papered with Joe’s Souvenir Outlet. And of course there is a permit in the window which notes the use of space will be for a “retail clothing store” (the store address on the permit incorrectly states “NE” as the quadrant).
It looks like the Souvenir Row we talked about several weeks ago will not be contained to the 10th & F corner, now spreading down F street. But don’t think we’re against all of these stores. We head into the souvenir shop that took over the old B&K Newsstand location (1004 F ST NW) on a fairly regular basis. They sell our favorite Habanero hot sauce, DC RedBone (Home of the Anacostias!).

Central Liquors is already open at their new location just a few blocks down the street. 625 E st NW.
I don’t share the tolerance for more souvenir stores but apparently there is enough demand for them to keep opening. To me they are practically blight and a nuisance. Hope they leave up the great Central Liquors sign!
How sad on so many levels. There are so many things we need in PQ and this is not one of them. Was the rent that ‘cheap’ for another souvenier store? Can’t imagine.
At last visit to Central’s new location, they still are not permitted to sell liquor – only wine. Also, the original Central sign cannot be moved to the new location because of restrictions on the space / building. Sad. I spoke to Alec, the owner, about this. I don’t know what the fate of the sign will be.

That is so sad. I love that liquor store. Very good selection of wine, knowledgeable staff and perfect location next door to cowgirl creamery. Any word on whether they are relocating?
