Chinatown CVS Makes Appearance On WJLA
Ed. Note: We used to have a link to WJLA but have taken it down as the page serving the story and the video is no longer available as of the afternoon of September 5. Should it reappear, we will relink the story.
A PQ Living reader pointed us to the WJLA 7 story broadcast last week about the operating condition of the Chinatown CVS. Looks like both sides of the equation are intensifying their efforts to promote their interests. On one side is the building owner, Ms. Yeni Wong, who bought the building wishing to redevelop the property and terminate the lease with CVS during the redevelopment period. On the other side is CVS, who ostensibly wants to keep the store running 24 hours in its current location and incarnation.
How do you think this prime piece of real estate should move forward?
Here are a few background stories on the subject…

I can’t imagine too many folks will be on the CVS side of this debate. Mrs. Wong and Riverdale International have shown a commitment to this neighborhood in both developing her properties and filling them with tenants. CVS provides the worst service in DC and that specific location refuses to clean up the trash outside their store or the loiterers inside. I say good riddance.
I think the focus should be on attracting more respectful employees for whatever retail businesses, if any, eventually occupy that space. I have never encountered such rude, spiteful and lazy employees in a store before compared to that CVS. The CVS on 6th between D and E is nothing like its ugly Chinatown step-child. The employees are generally courteous and the interior and exterior of the store is clean and maintained. Stop pointing fingers at CVS and focus on those fools inside.
I don’t see why we have such an undesirable store in such a choice location. That CVS store takes its customers for granted. I never use that store anymore but use the 6th and D CVS instead.
I have to plug the CVS atop Columbia Heights Metro as the poorest in customer service. Your Gallery Place location is pretty bad though. I love employees that cut the line to buy products when they are off shift, but in uniform. Really great for the 10 people already in line.
I was over near that CVS yesterday and ventured farther along H street to check out the progress of Vapiano’s. I was surprised to see a hole in the side of their building, the back of the building was half demolished – and the very distinct impression that Vapiano’s no longer has plans open. Certainly not in the Aug/Sept timeframe that I last heard. Does anyone know the scoop?
Worst…cvs…ever
the 6th and D cvs is much cleaner, not crowded, and a bigger selection.
they should put Johnny Rocket’s or something similar at 7th and H
Close that CVS as soon as possible.
Good to hear people go elsewhere, an organized boycott would be even better…
So, what is the worst that can happen with the CVS lease negotiations? We have to wait and wait for a few more years for site redevelopment. 2008 is just around the corner. They want to play hard ball and keep their store open, so when their lease is officially up (2010 or 2011, I am not sure), Riverdale International can just end it for good. They would no longer be able to occupy this spot if their lease is not renewed when their lease has “officially” expired. I am sure that they don’t want that to happen. I am sure another high-paying tenant would easily take that space if offered.
The store is an eyesore in the neighborhood and looks very dirty on the outside and inside. And, why is there frequent mountains of merchandise sitting out in the middle of the aisles or blocking access to the cashiers? Do other 24-hour CVS stores have the same situation?
I’m probably going to be the only one defending the CVS employees at this totally disgusting store, but here goes.
If I worked in a building that had no air conditioning (the contraption of late in the store was obviously because of recent activity from Ms. Wong and others); poor heat; was infested with vermin (I’ve been in the store when customers were fleeing and screaming because of a rat running amok); was filthy; was using any available space as storage; had indifferent “management”; and, had as much disdain for the employees as they did for customers, I would be one pissed off person (can I say that here?) with a serious attitude. Who wouldn’t?
Oh yes, I know, some are thinking they should get a job somewhere else and all that, but there just aren’t that many choices (or even better jobs) for some people. Bottom line is, nobody should have to work under those conditions in this country. Remember what brought about the union movement?
When I used to patronize the store I had compassion for these employees and always tried to be extra kind to them, even when I was being treated rudely. I switched to the store at Mass Ave & H St NW. It’s clean, well stocked (and not on the aisle floors) and even has a food store for urban dwellers.
I tip my ball cap to the abused employees at this store that should be condemned.

I won’t go in this CVS, it’s filthy, many of the people in there give me the creeps, service is horrible, and the line is always long. I use the one on 8th between D & E, also it’s less than a block from my building. A problem with this one though is that they close early.
Another much better CVS, especially if you have a car, is the one up on P near Whole Foods. You can park at Whole Foods, go to CVS and then do your food shopping.
My feet crawl up my legs when I enter this place! CVS are laughing all the way to the bank at this location, it just goes to show the demand there is for “normal” stores in the area. Get rid of this place and hopefully some of the “element” will go with it.
From a business perspective CVS would be crazy to not stick it out but like a bad marriage it has to go! Buh Bye!
Channel 7 is reporting that CVS won’t fight development in Chinatown . . .

The CVS is a business, not a resident, so they deserve no special treatment. Kick ’em out, raze the vermin-infested building, and put up a higher-quality, higher-density mixed-use building.
