Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Penn Quarter – We talked to a few of the workers loading equipment into the former Potato Valley Cafe (614 E St NW). The potato cafe is closed and will be replaced by a New York style pizza and sandwich shop. No word on an opening day. [PQL Intelligence Network]
Chinatown – Will the Verizon Center have additional static signs and be lit up with digital signs just like the corner of 7th and H St NW? A bill before the city council makes that proposal. [Washington Business Journal]
Downtown – We have a new opening date for Enzo Fargione’s Elisir on 11th St NW. It expects to open in November and the tasting menu’s price has now dropped below a Benny. [Washington Post]
14th St NW – Pulp, the quirky and fun gift store on 14th St NW in mid-city, will remain open as a local buyer has been found for the business. [Borderstan]
Shaw – Cambria Suites will be the hotelier in the CityMarket at O project. [Renew Shaw]

sign for this part of the Penn Quarter neighborhood — and it is pink, yes pink, neon at night. It’s garish and reeks of the down-and-out, rent-a-room-by-the-night-Bowery before it became an artistic haven. Thank heaven it doesn’t flash on and off!
Oh that poor resident whose condo windows are on either side of the sign — imagine coming home to PINK every night instead of a view down the street! Must have lost a ton of money on the condo’s value as well.

I’m happy to hear that Potato Valley closed. Not “happy” they didn’t make it, but happy that it may be replaced by a business that caters to people that both work AND live in the neighborhood. The potato cafe was only open weekdays for lunch. I live in the Lafayette, but was still never able to try it. If the place that replaces it really does have “NY style” pizza and sandwiches (I know, almost no chance of that), it’ll be welcomed by me.
