Don’t Go Over To The Dark Side (pic)
We spotted this mailbox outside the US Post Office at 12th St. on Penn Ave (the Ben Franklin P.O.). At first we thought it might be a Jedi mind trick but then realized it’s more likely an instance of marketing gone mad down at L’Enfant Plaza, USPS HQ. If you look closely, you even can see a web address on the mailbox. We’ll leave it to readers to explore that further.

Those have been around for a couple of months now.
So the Postal Service is marketing for Star Wars and HHS has PSAs featuring Shrek. Awesome – our tax dollars at work…
Just a correction…your tax dollars do not fund the Postal Service. The Postal Service is self-funded from revenues. The promotion for Star Wars is to increase revenues from collectors, which will help keep stamp prices down.
At the website on the mailbox you can vote for which stamp will be turned into stamps for individual sale.
Yoda is in first place and Darth Vader is on his tail.
Thanks for the attempted correction of my earlier statement, anon 5/20. However, in its FY 2008 budget submission, the Postal Service requested over $150 million (they got over $100 million for FY 2007). It may be largely self-funded through revenues, but it would be misleading to suggest that our taxpayer dollars don’t play a role in its operations.
