We have a few updates for you…as usual, lots going on in the restaurant scene.

Send us your downtown neighborhood news and tips in confidence to: pqliving[at]gmail.com

Lifestyle

Oil Men (Penn Quarter) – If you find yourself passing someone on 7th Street wearing two bullet shoulder belts filled with small vials of colored liquid, you just passed an “oil man.” He isn’t selling fuel for your car, rather, he is selling fuel for your love life in the form of aromatic fragrances (perfume/cologne). This WaPo article spells out what we’ve been seeing on the street for about 18 months in Penn Quarter.

Miss America Visits Carmine’s (Penn Quarter) – The Miss America contest took place last night but their first East Coast stop was in Washington, DC. The full complement of ladies dined at none other than Carmine’s (425 7th St NW). You can find the TV news story here, the WaPo story here, and a few pics here and here.

Date Lab in PQ! (Penn Quarter) – The Washington Post sends its Date Lab daters downtown for dinner at Bibiana Osteria-Enoteca. The daters then hit Shelly’s Backroom for cigars and bourbon. Perfect! How did the date turn out…you’ll have to click here to find out. We love us some Date Lab!

Grilling, Grilling, Grilling (Chinatown/Mount Vernon Triangle) – What is it like to grill on the roofdeck of a neighborhood condo? This WaPo article provides a whimsical view.

Development/Crib of the Week

Bible Museum (South of The National Mall) – Development of the as of yet unnamed Bible Museum in the former Washington Design Center building at 4th St and Virginia Ave SW is rolling. WaPo details the vision and the effort.

Crib of the Week (Mount Vernon Triangle) – We’re jonesing this top floor 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom condo at the Yale Steam Lofts. It’s Unit #1203 and has an airy, spacious feel to it with a north facing balcony. The listing price is $464,900, the condo fee is $435/month, and the reported square footage is 690 square feet. This building has one of the best pools in the neighborhood and the unit comes with 1 parking space. Sounds good to us! Restaurants

Metro Center Paul Opens! (Downtown) – PAUL, a French family bakery, is now open every day on F St NW between 12th and 13th St NW near the southern Metro Center entrance/exit. This location is in Columbia Square so the address is technically 555 13th St NW but don’t be fooled – the entrance fronts F St. We visited over the weekend and there is a row of outdoor seating so enjoy it while the weather is good! (See photo above.)

CityCenter DBGB Opens! (Downtown/Penn Quarter) – DBGB Kitchen and Bar (931 H St NW) opened in CityCenter two days ago to much acclaim. We went to a pre-opening event and enjoyed all the mini-bites available so we expect no less from the full blown restaurant. Menus are not yet posted on DBGB’s website but Eater DC (link) and the Washington City Paper (link) have the opening dinner menu salvos plus some background.

Native Foods Cafe Opening in October (Penn Quarter) – We learned from The 42 Bus website that the Native Foods Cafe (701 Pennsylvania Ave NW) in the Market Square complex plans to open on October 14 (scroll to bottom to see DC locations and opening dates).

Tel’Veh Changes Name (Mount Vernon Triangle) – The Tel’Veh wine bar (401 Massachusetts Ave NW) decided to change its stripes and in a hurry. It is now called Rudy’s Mediterranean Grill and is no longer a wine bar.

Ceiba Ending 11 Year Run (Downtown) – According to a press release, Ceiba (701 14th St NW), a Latin inspired restaurant from the Passion Food Restaurant Group, is closing at the end of September (the 27th to be precise). Some context can be found here and a short blurb from the release describes more:

The partners of the Latin inspired restaurant, Ceiba, [Chef Jeff Tunks, Gus DiMillo, David Wizenberg] are turning a new leaf and have decided to close the doors at the end of this month, September 27, 2014. It has been an exciting 11 years for the sleek American interpretation of an urban Latin establishment, Ceiba, but now is the time for its final hour. It was a challenging and heartfelt decision for the partners, but with much review of the varied external factors, closing the doors was the best course of action. It will leave behind a legacy of spicy, tangy Latin cuisine and fiery memories – of tropical-style lunches, exotic dinner choices, and annual festive celebrations, right there on 14th and G Streets just blocks from The White House.
