Getting Ready For The G-20 Financial Summit
Preparations are under way for tomorrow’s G-20 financial summit taking place at the National Building Museum (401 F Street NW) in the Penn Quarter. It all started on October 22 when President Bush announced he was inviting leaders from 20 nations to meet November 15 to discuss possible solutions to the global financial crisis along with the heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. President-elect Barack Obama was invited to attend but declined opting to have surrogates meet with country delegations on his behalf.
Will we get a fresh look at regulating and monitoring the global financial markets? We’ll have to wait the weekend to find out.

Sidewalks blocked. I live on 5th Street and building management tells us we have to use the alley door. The dry cleaner has a sign up saying it will be closed due to “government activities.”
This strikes me as an odd place to host 20 world leaders. They have to secure an area right in the middle of a city. Is the refrigerator empty at Camp David?
The National Building Museum is a gorgeous venue. As a stand alone building on its own block, NBM is straight forward to secure.
If you have never been inside, here’s a 360 tour of the Great Hall:

I live in Mass Court facing Fourth St. I received a letter from management notifying us of a national event, that there would be police checkpoints and cars could be searched, but that we could still access entrances and garages with proof of residence. Also, those of us facing Fourth St must not open our windows at any point on Saturday. I assume that’s code for “you’ll be sniped.”
If they do everything at Camp David the short-hand gets awfully confusing. Camp David is all about an Israeli-Egyptian peace agreement. It’s been used, you can’t go back there for anything but weekedn mountainbiking. Annapolis got the latest Israeli-Palestinian program. Watergate gets Nixon et al. Breton Woods got this type of thing 65 years ago.
So if some ground breaking agreement were to be reached (won’t happen with this lame duck, but for the sake of arguement) what would it be called? The Building Museum Construction? The Penn Quarter Drawing?
I’ve never been a fan of the hypersecuritization of DC for these types of events, but a three block perimeter around the Building Museum is completely ridiculous. On top of the Obama transition HQ security perimeter, we are having significant portions of the public spaces (and now a metro stop) in our neighborhood taken away by the govt with no compensation. There was a time when talk of closing PA Ave in front of the White House was considered un-American. Sad to see how far we’ve come…
The G20 Summit “inconvenienced” the neighborhood for 24 hours (or less). My out-of-town visitor and I thought it was pretty cool to be “so close” to 20 world leaders and having caught a glimpse of the ongoing motorcades, a Free Tibet and the Prop 8 protests.
Oh, I heart DC.

Does anyone know if the sidewalks will be open? That is my dog walking route.
