New Voting Precinct Up For Review May 7

Posted by pqresident
May 5, 2008

With an influx of residents into the Mount Vernon Triangle and the lower and eastern part of the Penn Quarter, there have been calls for another voting precinct to be carved out of Ward 6 with an accompanying PQ voting location. Right now, PQ Ward 6ers have to trek over to Capitol Hill to vote. A paragraph on Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells’ blog says it all:

Now there’s good news to report on this front. The Board [DC Board of Elections and Ethics] is planning to take final action on Wednesday, May 7th, regarding the creation of Precinct 143 in Ward 6 — the District’s newest voting precinct — essentially splitting the current Precinct 130 into two parts.

To show your support for creating a new Precinct and a local polling place (the Chinese church at 5th and H St, NW), send a letter of support to the Board of Elections and Ethics, 441 4th Street, NW, Suite 250N, Washington, D.C. 20001 by close of business Tuesday, May 6th. If you want to attend the Board meeting in person, it will be held in room 280 – north of the One Judiciary Square building at 441 Fourth Street, NW, May 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. For further information, the Board can be reached at 202-727-2525 (TDD: 202-639-8916 – e-mail: boee [at] dc.gov).

The newly proposed Precinct [Google map] includes residential buildings in the Penn Quarter and the Mount Vernon Triangle.

Props to Tommy Wells, Life In Mount Vernon Square and the Downtown Neighborhood Association for covering this topic also.

The Downtown Neighborhood Association’s involvement was more than just “covering this topic.”

The DNA spearheaded this effort and worked hard with ANC6C09 Commissioner Charlie Docter and Councilmember Tommy Wells to make this happen. DNA Director Miles Groves appeared at a Board of Elections hearing to testify in favor of this.

Besides the ways listed in the article, we can also show support for this and other important initiatives by joining the DNA, volunteering and attending its meetings. Membership info and meeting notices are posted on the DNA’s web site at http://www.dcdna.org.

The DNA stopped posting minutes of its meetings on its website in December – why?

This is great! I totally support the new polling place – I could walk a couple of blocks as opposed to schlepping all the way over to Capitol South in the drenching, freezing rain like last time.

But I don’t think I’ll be able to get a letter in by close of business tomorrow, as this is the first I’ve heard of this. I don’t see any email address to send supportive comments in.

the e-mail is spelled out at the end of the third paragraph in today’s post, after the phone numbers.

I have just sent an impassioned email to them. Hopefully someone will read it. I always have the feeling any email to a DC government unit ends up in some black hole of ether.

Joe, re DNA minutes, some have been posted since December. Try emptying your brower’s cache.

The new voting precinct was just approved!!! Thanks Council Member Wells!! Thanks DNA!!! This is a first step to having a unified voice for our neighborhood issues.

If you’ll look at the proposed boundaries of the new precinct (see http://www.dcdna.org/News.html), it looks like a map of Texas. We can call this the Lone Star Precinct.
