Former Shimba Hills Site Getting New Tenant (Dunkin Donuts)
In August, we reported on the closure of homegrown coffee shop Shimba Hills. But it appears that the 601 F Street storefront (next to the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro elevators on 7th Street) will soon be getting a new tenant.
A building permit located on the front doors details that interior renovations are being done to turn the site into a Dunkin Donuts. Which means no more long distance trips to the Dupont Krispy Kreme for me. Coffee and carbohydrates…yummy!

seems like most of the hating is coming from the DD supporters? Most must disparage other restaurants or ethnic foods in order to justify Dunkin Donuts?
I am happy that others are happy with DD. I too may like DD once I confirm they make their donuts on-site, that seems like an awfully small spot to house the equipment. The DDs that share space with Baskin Robbins and have their donuts delivered there are uniformly awful.
Why can’t there be an independent bakery in PQ? People on this blog seem to think there is only fancy/expensive places they’ve never heard of or cheap chains that are at every intersection in middle America…
More independent stores period would be nice in PQ, but I have a feeling that commercial rents are prohibitively high. DC plans to support small businesses, but they really need to do more to subsidize small businesses before we have a city of CVSs, Banks, and national food chains.
Speaking of, have you all seen that new Commerce Bank at 7th and I? Such a shame for a such a beautiful space to get used for a couple of a ATMs and a teller window. There outta’ be a law.
boy, do i miss shimba coffee..
only decent cuban coffee within walking distance and their regular brew didn’t taste:
a). burnt (like Starbuck’s)
b). like beef stew (like Duncan Donuts)
