Inaugural Poll Results
With January’s Presidential inauguration now in the rear view mirror, our (unscientific) inaugural poll results for the two polls we ran follow…
The pre-inauguration question was…
Where will you be on January 20th, the day of the Presidential Inauguration?
1. Staying at home, but watching the crowd outside – 172 votes – 32.8%
2. Out of town – it’s going to be a circus – 95 votes – 18.1%
3. Sitting on the mall, watching on the big screen – 92 votes – 17.6%
4. I have tickets (lucky)! – 60 votes – 11.5%
5. Just another day at work – 53 votes – 10.1%
6. Lining up on Penn Ave as soon as possible – 52 votes – 9.9%
Total of 524 votes over 19 days. (Our most popular poll ever!)
The post-inauguration question was…
How smoothly did the inaugural events go for downtown DC and the Penn Quarter?
1. Pretty good – a few minor issues – 105 votes – 46.5%
2. Average – on balance, just okay – 38 votes – 16.8%
3. Perfect – wouldn’t change a thing – 31 votes – 13.7%
4. Not so good – more snags than not – 27 votes – 11.9%
5. Terrible – I hope 2013 is much better – 25 votes – 11.1%
Total of 226 votes over 30 days.
Most of you appeared to stay out of the cold and watch the event on television with a positive opinion of the whole experience. We were there for it all and hope to do it again in four years.

I guess most people that stayed home thought the inauguration went well. That would make the last poll very misleading. I went outside to observe the chaos and it was BAD. No one was getting thru to the parade and police were ignoring the crowds. I looked at the parade route from my rooftop and it was pretty bare, so much room for more people, but they wouldn’t let anyone through.
My friends that got through said the bleachers were so empty that they were asked to come sit in them so it wouldn’t look so empty on TV when the president came by.
Furthermore, the security checkpoints were set up at 345 AM one night when I was coming home from celebrations. It wasn’t supposed to be til 4AM. They wouldn’t let us through. Secret Service had the wrong list (commercial guests instead of RESIDENTIAL guests) and the Metropolitan Police were not cooperating with Secret Service – it was a huge power trip/miscommunication week. This resulted in me not getting home until 5am and waiting out in the freezing cold.
Overall the inaugural celebrations were a fun time, but it did not go smoothly.
