Metro To Hold Fare Hike Hearings This Week
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) announced a series of six public hearings to discuss recently proposed fare hikes for the area’s public Metro bus and subway systems. The hearings will take place this Tuesday through Thursday at a variety of locations.
The closest hearing to the PQ will be on Wednesday, November 14, at Metro headquarters (the Jackson Graham Building), 600 5th Street, NW, starting with an open house at 6:30 pm followed by the hearings at 7 pm.
Details on how these public consultations will run can be found on Metro’s web site. Analysis of the fare hikes can be found in WaPo.

I will definitely be in attendance!
and though I use the metro and bus system every day I can understand and support a moderate price raise (the are inevitable in any urban city) I am more concerned with what they propose to do with the money. I don’t want to hear that they are just using it for misc expenses.
These are opportunities to increase transparency and create initiatives that will benefit the users and have their support and input. We shall see how it goes.

I don’t take the bus that often, but when I do I am always struck by 2 thoughts:
1) Why do Metrobus drivers think its ok to talk on their Cellphones while driving a bus.
2) They could balance the Metro budget if they actually collected fares from everyone who rides the bus. It seems to me that every time I ride the bus there are at least one or two people who get on and either just blatantly don’t pay or fumble for change and step into the bus as though they are going to come back and pay when they get their change together, but of course don’t.
Admittedly, not a scientific survey, since I don’t ride that often but I am probably on a bus once a month or so.
