Summer Sips: G&T on Tap
Last night we had a chance to attend a networking event at Mockingbird Hill (1843 7th St., NW). While most known for their sherry program, one of their best offerings, in our opinion, is their Gin and Tonic, which happens to be available ON TAP. The house-made tonic features notes of citrus and spice and is the perfect refreshment for a Summer evening.
Tracking The MLK Library’s Renovation Process
The MLK Library is moving through the renovation process having now selected an architecture team to redesign the aging Mies designed structure at the corner of 9th and G St NW. The architectural solicitation was also released for housing an interim library and associated programming.
There are a few websites we’d like to point out where readers can find information about the renovation project as below. The first link is the best link to follow to track ongoing progress and updates:

DC Shorts Film Festival Coming In September – Filmmaker Hosts Needed
DC Shorts, the annual short film festival that was born and grew up right here in Penn Quarter, takes place September 11 through 21 at the E Street Cinema and the Navy Memorial auditorium.
The festival is also in search of hosts who can put up guest rooms for filmmakers who come to the event and travel to Washington, DC. More information follows below:

Host a Visiting Filmmaker
Thursday – Sunday, September 11th – 14thOvernight quarters needed during the festival
If you have a spare bed, a sleep sofa, or room to set up an air mattress, consider hosting a filmmaker
For this hospitable gesture, the Festival producers give hosts
- Four Tickets to Screenings
- Two Tickets to Any Party
- Two Tickets to Best of DC Shorts
- Access to DC Shorts Online Film Festival with over 100 Films
Now in its 10th year, the DC Shorts Film Festival has grown into the largest short film event on the East Coast – showcasing 135 films from 25 nations. With this amazing growth have come some challenges, including the need for more volunteers to house the filmmakers.
DC Shorts encourages filmmakers to come to Washington and attend the festival; this year, more than 140 filmmakers will attend, some need a place to stay for a few days. Filmmakers are scheduled throughout the day so they really only need a place to sleep and shower.
Please forward this to your friends, colleagues, and family members who might be interested – or willing – to host a filmmakerTo host a filmmaker complete the form at: http://bit.ly/dcs13-hostform

Dragon Themed Digital Billboards Rise At Gallery Place In Chinatown/Penn Quarter
Today we observed workers putting presumably final touches on a dragon headed digital billboard (clickable photos above) at the entrance to the Gallery Place alley (701 7th St NW) with blade signs facing both north and south down 7th Street NW slightly canted at an angle. This intersection is where G St NW tees into 7th Street NW between the Verizon Center and the main Gallery Place commercial/residential building.
Orange Barrel Media based in Columbus, Ohio, who books time on the signs didn’t quite get their way from their original plan from 2010 which would have had much taller and inappropriately positioned signs on the Gallery Place edifice itself. For a sense of how advertising is pitched by Orange Barrel and what this signage will look like once lit, one can visit this link and click on the second and third images from the rightmost image in the slideshow (the fifth and sixth images in the slideshow sequence).
Past experience with digital signage installed in the neighborhood leads us to believe there will be a bright burn in period followed by regular operations at a lower intensity.
