Abe Pollin, Wizards Owner, Passes Away
There’s no doubt that Abe Pollin, owner of the Washington Wizards basketball team, made a big impact on DC in general and downtown specifically. He committed to and followed through on construction of the MCI (now Verizon) Center in our neighborhood in 1997, brought a needed catalyst to an underused part of town and used his own money to do so. If there was anyone who saw what downtown DC could be, it was him. Abe Pollin passed away today at the age of 85.

Macy’s Holiday Window Displays Go Live Today
We were wondering when the downtown Macy’s (1201 G St, NW) would unveil their holiday window displays facing G Street NW. Now we know that it is today at 5 pm – singer Patti Labelle will be on hand to perform and do the honors along with Santa, of course. Last year it was Brian McKnight crooning…this year it will be Patti Labelle giving shoppers a new attitude.
Crash…Bang…Gu-gu-gu-gu
We’ve gotten accustomed to the possibility of being awakened at 7:30 am on weekdays by the trash pickup at the office building across the street. No need to have two alarm clocks…the second one is free courtesy of the trash haulers. The weekend mornings, however, are usually blissfully quiet but this last Saturday we heard some new ante meridiem noises from outside that included the urban version of a woodpecker (an excavator mounted hydraulic jackhammer) and a babbling brook (a backhoe loader pushing a steel plate along the street) but perhaps not as soothing as those found in nature. What’s the clamor about?
DC Link Roundup: Heard In The ‘Hood
Here’s what we were reading last week about neighborhood news in DC.

All Over DC – Hope you busted out your clock on a chain…Public Enemy’s Flava Flav and Chuck D were in town to raise awareness about homelessness and perform in a benefit concert at GWU. The best part? Rapping off a flat bed truck as it rolled through Foggy Bottom (at 2:06 in the video below). [WaPo]
Shaw – The Passenger, a new bar in the former Warehouse space on 7th Street, NW, aside the Convention Center, opens. [The (Mount Vernon) Triangle] & [WeLoveDC] & [Brightest Young Things]
Penn Quarter – Will our area get a boutique burger joint? Flip Burger might be it. [The (Mount Vernon) Triangle]
7th Street NW – We saw a squadron of nicely dressed bicyclists go by while coming back from the CVS. Will this bicycle-riding-in-your-finest-tweed event rival the yearly drag-queen-race-in-their-high-heels Drag Race? [WeLoveDC] & [Washingtonian]
