DCist has an interesting post about the possibility of the MLK Public Library becoming a Bloomingdale’s. Apparently, the chain has been searching for a new location within the District proper. DCist declares this possibility “a bad idea” but luckily, “a bad idea that is unlikely to come to pass.”
Old Convention Center Redevelopment Financing Announced
Yesterday, the Washington Business Journal reported on the more technical aspects of the Old Convention Center redevelopment plan and the associated $850 million financing (City, developers agree on financing plan for old convention site – WBJ). There’s a 57,300 square foot plot on the site the city is retaining control over and our read of the article is that the city left the door open regarding use of the plot be it retail, housing or public building. Does that mean the city still has designs on putting a new library on the site? Has the MLK Central Library outlived its usefulness? We’ll have to wait until next year to find out when the city makes a choice.

Bistro D’OC Opens 2nd Bar Upstairs
Back in October we reported that Bistro D’OC had added “Wine Bar” to their window display, well on Friday we discovered that they’ve opened a second bar upstairs to complete the Wine Bar transition. Although not advertised well from the outside, Bistro D’OC now has a wine bar upstairs complete with a more diverse wine list, and wines also available by the half glass.
They also have a bar menu with lighter fare available upstairs. Management told us they’re hoping word will spread about the new bar upstairs, fearing that people walk away when they see the six or so seats at the downstairs bar already taken.
Bistro D’OC has also added a new dessert chef to their staff whose specialty is homemade chocolates. We tasted a dark chocolate hazelnut ganache that was amazing. They’re also offering Yule Log cakes to take home for the holidays. $42 each, they come in three flavors: Pistachio, Double Chocolate, and Coconut.

Bed, Bath and Beyond Saves Blogger From Herself
When you live in Penn Quarter, it’s the small details that you relish. The perfect Chai Tea from Teaism. The view from the rooftop pool on a sunny summer day. The newest “must read” from Olsson’s. But it’s also the little things that drive you nuts.
And for me, the one little thing that made me practically apoplectic was the escalators at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Being narrow beyond measure is one thing, but the fact that the down escalator was on the left and the up escalator was on the right was a constant annoyance. I don’t know how many times I stepped onto the right hand escalator before realizing that it was the wrong one. It seems like a small thing to remember, but when you’ve been indoctrinated to walk, drive and stand on the right: it’s a massive paradigm shift. And frankly, it’s completely un-American.
But I will be annoyed no longer. BB&B has finally normalized their escalators and saved me from being the airhead girl trying to walk down the up escalator. And for that, I thank them.
