UDPATE: Chief Of Police Lanier To Speak At PQNA B’fast Next Week (Tue, Oct 27)
We received an update from the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association that MPD Chief of Police, Cathy Lanier, will speak and answer questions at the Association’s October meeting. This is your chance to ask her questions about public safety. On our mind is what is going with the homeless encampment at 11th and E St in front of the former ESPN Zone entrance as the encampment has been there for a few months now.
The exact text follows:
We [the Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association] are delighted that Chief of Police Cathy Lanier became available to speak at the Penn Quarter breakfast meeting. We asked her to address a number of enforcement issues that have been of concern to Penn Quarter residents and businesses: homeless encampments, excessive noise, and an up-tick in what appear to be drug sales. Chief Lanier will respond to questions following her talk.

Foodie Radar: Poste
Upon a recent visit to one of our go-to neighborhood spots, Poste (555 8th St., NW), we were surprised by several menu changes. While sad to see some of our long-time favorites gone, we loved the fresh new flavors and presentation. One recommendation for your next visit, the Duck Ravioli.
Barnes & Noble And The Goethe-Institut Are Leaving Penn Quarter
One business and one non-profit are leaving the neighborhood. Barnes & Noble, the big box bookseller at the corner of 12th and E St NW, along with the Goethe-Institut, the German language and cultural institute on 7th St between H and I St NW, have announced that they could not negotiate deals to stay in their space.
The downtown location of Barnes & Noble is the last big box/chain bookstore in DC and it will be closing by the end of the year. This location clocks in at 32,000 square feet.
The Goethe-Institut has been on 7th Street NW for close to 20 years and includes a theater used by many film festivals and programs. The source article from WAMU radio says the owner wanted to raise the rent by 60 percent. It will decamp to another location at 1990 K St NW.
This is more evidence that the rent is just too damn high.
