Papa John’s In The Triangle

Posted by pqresident
May 1, 2008

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a blue tarp covering a future Papa John’s! This retail space formerly housing The Cave and next to Tunnel Fine Wines & Spirits (311 H Street, NW) at 3rd Street and Mass Ave is being converted into a Papa John’s pizza restaurant. Could this be a new sit down restaurant in MVT? Regardless, you’ll be able to get your pizza and beer/wine all in one run!

This is interesting. They’re going to build a $1.3 Million tennis stadium on the old convention center site for 7 games, featuring Serena Williams and Anna Kournikova. That’s about $185,000 per game. Nice.

Comment by PQS on May 1, 2008 @ 7:53 am

That’s the last thing we need. So much for hoping for a cafe, a real sit down restaurant, or some other local boutique.

Comment by PQ Res on May 1, 2008 @ 8:32 am

I’m actually excited about this. I think it’s good because they are open late. I’m looking forward to welcoming them to the neighborhood.

Comment by monkeyrotica on May 1, 2008 @ 9:04 am

I wish their sauce didn’t taste like ketchup. I suppose if you’re drunk enough, you’ll eat anything. Look at Jumbo Slice.

Comment by Mr. T in DC on May 1, 2008 @ 9:48 am

Yeah, that’s some pretty bad pizza, though I suppose better than an empty storefront.

Comment by gpliving on May 1, 2008 @ 10:25 am

I think this is great because you can’t get pizza delivery in this neighborhood!

The online restaurant locater says:

Coming Soon: Online Ordering is coming soon!
Address:
313 H Street N.W.
Washington, DC 20001
Phone:
Delivery Hours: 11:00 am – 12:00 am
Carryout Hours: 11:00 am – 09:30 pm

I’m with GPLiving. Until Matchbox decides to start delivering that Spicy Meatball Pizza to me for free, Papa John’s will be good enough for those cold/rainy/intoxicated nights when I don’t feel like making the trek out for food.

Comment by gpliving on May 1, 2008 @ 10:50 am

Thanks Kelby!

I live on that block, and I do wish something else was going in there — if only because a chain delivery restaurant won’t generate any foot traffic. Realistically though we weren’t likely to get a cafe or sit-down restaurant — the space is not big. Unfortunately once a Papa John’s is there it’s probably there to stay, so I hope it won’t tarnish was has prospects to eventually be an upscale neighborhood.

@gpliving…
pizza boli ..delivers a white pizza with mushrooms, chicken & xtra garlic…to my place umm..well..regularly enough that they know me by name…but ill be glad to give papa johns a try!!!
xoxo

Comment by Mike on May 1, 2008 @ 11:06 am

Yeah, this is awesome news. Finally, some decent delivery pizza in the area. Can’t say that I’m the biggest fan of Bolis or domino’s, and matchbox is more a sitdown place. I was looking forward to the Ledo’s coming, but papa johns is even better.

Comment by pqresident on May 1, 2008 @ 11:25 am

Having the community encourage the Papa John’s to have seating inside could be a good step. What you do want is customers (but not loiterers and riff raff) to come and stay awhile. Tunnel doesn’t serve singles so the boozies won’t be hanging around…

That a private party is investing their own money, time and effort into a new business in a nascent neighborhood is a promising sign.

Comment by PQ Guy on May 1, 2008 @ 12:50 pm

I like Papa Johns also, and don’t really care what goes in the space.

But, for those who say there is no pizza delivery:

Dominos delivers
Pizza Boli delivers
Armands delivers

Actually, my post brought up a new idea. Can the moderators of this blog PLEASE do a post on what delivers to PQ?

This is a pretty vital topic for—oh I don’t know—EVERYONE living in this area. So, instead of bumbling around looking for a delivery place, why not make a post of it that we can all add to?

Also, I followed up on the Asia 9 delivery comment made in another post a few weeks ago. Asia 9 does NOT deliver, but does do take-out.

As for delivery, here is what I have found:

Dominos, Pizza Boli, Armands, DC Snacks, Wok and Roll. What am I missing? (aside from places like takeout taxi)

Comment by 555Girl on May 1, 2008 @ 1:09 pm

Kanlaya Thai also delivers!

Comment by Rik on May 1, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

I am so frustrated with Pizza in DC – being from NY, I just love real NY style pizza and used to be able to find it on every block. I have never been able to find any pizza in DC that even comes close.

Anyone out there found a good NY style pizza place in DC? Especially one that delivers to PQ area?

Maybe PQliving could do a poll on it.

Anybody know when Papa John’s is going to open?

Comment by Si Kailian on May 1, 2008 @ 2:00 pm

thai chili/sushi go round, mehak…

Comment by PQ Observer on May 1, 2008 @ 2:04 pm

Rik,

Get over to Manhattan Deli on 8th and Pennsylvania by the Navy Memorial. Should cover your craving in between visits to NY.

Comment by Anon on May 1, 2008 @ 2:25 pm

Rik, I’m an ex-NewYorker to, the only place that has the taste of NYC is Vace’s, nearest to us is Clevelenad Park, on Connecticut near the Zoo, homemade sauce, cheese that melts and thin crust slightly burnt on the botom. Only buy pies or when it’s at least warm from the oven. Bliss.

Comment by PQ on May 1, 2008 @ 2:58 pm

I think Papa John’s is just fine. It’s nice to have a mix in the neighborhood. Speaking of which, does anyone know what’s going on the retail space of the Dumont? Or whether Starbucks plans to open in the new office building at 455 Mass Ave?

Comment by Tim on May 1, 2008 @ 3:21 pm

Can anyone vouch for the condition of the LEDO PIZZA building on Mass Ave? With Ledo, PJs, Ella’s, Vapiano, and Matchbox, PQ/MVT will have several varied pizza options.

Comment by LiveAndWorkinPQ on May 1, 2008 @ 3:34 pm

There is a little italian / pizza place that is more NY style than any others i have seen here.

I might get the location wrong by a block one way or the other, but it is on G between 12th and 13th on the North side of the block.

It doesn’t have a big sign and I can’t remember the name, but it is one of those places that sells pizza by the slice which is the way I think of pizza (having grown up in NY)

Comment by Stuart on May 1, 2008 @ 4:17 pm

While we’re on the topic of food delivery in PQ/Triangle…just noticed that Rosa Mexicana is now delivering (I kid you not!!). Now if only they would deliver pitchers of their frozen Pom Margarita’s…we’d all be happy!

#22, I think that is a combo Pizza Pino/Eddy’s Ice cream.

Comment by Kimberly on May 1, 2008 @ 5:17 pm

This place delivers (at least to me at 400 mass ave): http://www.mynypizzaco.com/
I recently discovered it via Chowhound, I believe.
We’ve only tried the greek salad (great!), plain cheese pizza (really good, but better after reheated and crisped up a little on the pizza stone) and the white pizza (not as good as I hoped–basically a cheese pizza without the sauce, rather than with ricotta and garlic).
We will likely continue to order from them, even once Papa John’s opens across the street…

Comment by Columbo on May 1, 2008 @ 5:31 pm

That looks interesting #25, I might give them a try tonight. Thanks!

Comment by Clara Barton Dweller on May 1, 2008 @ 5:34 pm

What is “New York” style pizza?

Comment by Si Kailian on May 1, 2008 @ 5:38 pm

Starbucks should be in City Vista. another in 455 would be like sweet sweet icing on that retail cake!

Comment by Anon on May 1, 2008 @ 9:36 pm

Best walk-to pizza (no delivery) is Pizza Pino on G between 13 and 14 — closest thing downtown to real NY pizza — chewy, well cooked crust and good toppings. Too bad they don’t deliver, tho.

A Papa Johns is a welcome neighbor — I hate Dominos and Pizza Hut — when you can get them to delivery. Manny & Olgas is always cold. Love DC Snacks — the pita sandwiches rock.

This isn’t New York. Why would you complain about the lack of New York pizzas? That’s like complaining about the dearth of quality Greek food in Bangalore.

What is up with Matchbox’s liquor license? There’s a notice in the window about upcoming hearings.

Comment by gpliving on May 2, 2008 @ 11:00 am

#31: it may just be up for renewal

Comment by LiveAndWorkinPQ on May 2, 2008 @ 11:59 am

Restaurants with liquor licenses have to apply for renewal every three years.

Comment by Yet another anon on May 2, 2008 @ 1:28 pm

#1 & #2 the notice announced a hearing fro a for a substantial change, is that the standard terminology for a license renewal?

Comment by Yet another anon on May 2, 2008 @ 1:29 pm

OOPs, that last post should have benn addressed to #31 and #32 instead of #1 and #2.
