Pennsylvania Avenue Gets Bicycle Lanes
We’ve really been impressed by the change in the city’s attitude towards multi-modal transportation over the last five years and continually see more and more people pedaling around town. Pennsylvania Avenue is the latest transportation artery to get bicycle lanes and we’ve seen the crews painting the lanes both day and night getting those stripes and markings in top-top shape. Two thumbs up and more photos after the break!

This is as ridiculous as the Barnes Dance, there aren’t enough bikers in DC for this to be effective. Cars rule the roads, that’s life.
That’s the most ridiculous comment I’ve seen in a while. There was absolutely no impact to anyone after installing the Penn Ave bike lanes as per the DDOT bicycle lane master plan, except for enabling bicycle riders to access Penn Ave more safely and effectively.
The reason why people are trapped inside of their cars is because there is no infrastructure available for other modes of transportation. That will change more when more bike lanes are created and intersections become more pedestrian friendly with more Barnes Dances.
I just used the bike lanes on Pennsylvania with a friend who rarely cycles — they were awesome! It will definitely increase my riding.
I’m all for bike lanes but I wonder if the Penn. Ave lanes will end up like the bike lane on 9th St, which is used by more cars than bikes and consequently often hazardous for bikers.
Anonymous: the bike lanes are located in the median area of the road. They never were traffic lanes to begin with and a car can’t drive in them without running into lamp posts every block.
I don’t know about that, the turn lanes are now reduced from where they used to be at lights and I drive that route every day. Maybe I’ve seen one biker a week on Penn Ave., this sounds like a waste of public funds if that is the frequency of use these lanes will produce. All I know is that when it comes to BMW vs. Bike, Bimmer wins!

I’m actually really happy they are putting these lanes in, as it will make it easier for me to ride to work. But I have to say that I am a bit worried about the traffic patterns after they take the cones away. I’m curious how many half-asleep drivers will still turn into or drive in the bike lanes after the cones are gone just because that’s where they are used to driving.
