Pitango Gelato Opens Their Doors (413 7th St NW)
Even though the press release indicates Pitango Gelato’s (413 7th St NW) opening today, the newest in chilly, organic desserts-to-go in our neighborhood opened yesterday afternoon where we found a bevy of customers in line. In an area where openings are sometimes measured in years, Pitango sprinted to an open from January to May of this year. Both gelato and sorbet are part of the line-up; we tried a regular cup of gelato split between hazelnut and crème fraiche. The hazelnut was good but the crème fraiche was divine. Regular cups (up to 2 flavors) are $4.85 and large cups (up to 3 flavors) are $6.50. Also available are a variety of Italian coffees brewed with organic, locally roasted espresso beans.

Stopped last night. Great gelato and sorbet, eager to try the coffee, very attentive staff, nice benches on 7th Street. And really happy that the place next door will be a casual and presumably less expensive Indian restaurant. We need more casual and price-friendly restaurants for those of us who live in the neighborhood (as compared to those who view our neighborhood as a fine dining destination).
I stopped by before seeing a play and had the coconut and a chocolate. They were quite good, and this is speaking as one who makes her own ice cream because everyone else’s is blah. This not blah. Light but not blah.

Swung by last night. Friendly staff and tasty gelato, what a great addition to the neighborhood.
