Retail Food Update: Dunkin Donuts & Panera

Posted by pqresident
January 10, 2008

Ed. Note: The Dunkin Donuts IS open as of Sunday, January 27, 2008.

The Dunkin Donuts on 7th Street being finalized in the former Shimba Hills Coffee space should be open next Monday midday. We are told there will be no tables or seating so it’s grab your donuts and go (don’t forget to pay). That’s right. Mmm….donuts, PQ style. A help wanted banner is up if you want to take advantage of the employee discount.

Last October, we reported that Panera Bread would open at the corner of 10th and F Streets. Well, call it a dream deferred as it is at least six months away from opening. Apparently corporate only doles out opening dates that are six or fewer months away and no opening date means it’ll be at least another six months. Can’t wait to buy those fresh whole loaves that Panera sells. Can you say Sesame Semolina Miche? We’ll pass along further word when we know.

A hat tip goes to PQ Living reader Cheryl for the sleuthing.

I heard the Dunkin’ Donuts was opening mid-week and there is going to be bar seating and some tables just not right away.

Dunkin Donuts = WHOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!

I think I will try them out on Monday, and maybe Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, certainly on Saturday, and perhaps a cup of coffee on Sunday.

I can say in no uncertain terms that this is already my favorite business in PQ.

Munchkins here I come!

No tables…they must’ve heard about all the bums in Penn Quarter who would’ve camped out all day inside. I doubt the lack of tables, however, will stop the thugs and other low lifes from congregating outside and harrasing passerbys.

ooooooh!! i am so excited! i will be there with my red rider and all my friends!

i can’t wait to have maple frosted donuts and hazelnut coffee!

Any readers with knowledge of local retail leasing activity: any news on the old Balducci space? Saw a few gents looking and heard a British accent. Would be great if it was part of Tesco’s push into eastern U.S. see –http://naturalspecialtyfoodsmemo.blogspot.com/2007/11/tuesday-talking-points-memo-its.html

They are going to have flatbread sandwiches also.

The chocolate cafe on F street is also scheduled to open April / May i think. Was originally named C3Fix, but now going by either Coco-dc or Cocosala.

Comment by Smith MBA on January 11, 2008 @ 9:43 am

Evroult, nice thought but there is no infrastructure from Tesco on the east coast. I am lookig forward to the Safeway opening at this point in the City Vista.

Comment by PQ Observer on January 11, 2008 @ 10:25 am

I am thrilled the DD will be takeout-only. I love their iced coffee, but want to keep the harrassment to a minimum.

I recently spent a lot of time at Panera’s in the midwest, and was delighted that they offered free wi-fi. Does anyone know if the Panera here will do the same?

Comment by anon 2 on January 11, 2008 @ 11:10 am

I love Panera’s and the have WI-FI at all of their locations.

I am currently in an area on business where there are several Panera’s and it is such a treat.

Great coffee, soups and salads. and as someone mentioned…..love their breads.

Can’t wait.

Bad news, folks: No hot donuts. Duncan Donuts delivers baked goods to these outlets twice a day.

Comment by dave on January 11, 2008 @ 12:07 pm

Mike: that is disappointing. As I commented in the first Dunkin’ Donuts thread here, their combo restaurants with Baskin Robbins have uniformly awful donuts, IMO.

Comment by Anon. on January 11, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

Mike,

Can you verify that somehow? I saw people installing baking appliances in the building not too long ago.

Comment by Anon on January 13, 2008 @ 12:42 am

I love Panera! I luv luv luv Panera and hate traveling all the way to Silver Spring or Ballston just to get my hands on those flaky apple tarts. Corner Bakery just can’t compare…

Comment by Adam on January 14, 2008 @ 5:06 pm

My co-worker, Dan, tried to hit up DD this afternoon with no success. I hope DD doesn’t take as long as Chop’t did to open!

:mega sad face:

Don’t forget there’s a Panera at Friendship Heights too. It’s underneath Meiwah, just down that little hill from Chico’s, across from the scorched earth that will apparently become Bloomingdale’s parking.

Comment by pqresident on January 14, 2008 @ 6:52 pm

we checked over the weekend and were a tad concerned that DD wouldn’t hit their stated opening day. regardless, we did see the menu signs up and much progress as contractors worked over the weekend, so it should be soon.

if anyone hears an update, send it to our mailbag: pqliving [at] gmail.com

This morning, I had my mouth all ready for a medium coffee with cream only to discover the Dunkin Donuts has yet to open. I was there around 9:30 a.m. Has anyone heard anything more?

Comment by JLY on January 16, 2008 @ 11:12 am

As of Wednesday mid morning, it’s not open yet. Just walked by there and peeked inside- I’d give it another week before it opens…
