Technicolor Sunday
Come for the lecture, stay for the films. We love the various film and lecture series that go on at the National Gallery of Art’s East building auditorium, but we’re particularly interested in the combo being shown today. Starting at 2 pm archivist and historian David Pierce will be discussing the history and uses of Technicolor, particularly as it was used for outdoor shots.
Two movies follow the lecture; at 3 pm the gallery will be showing the musical Follow Thru (with Nancy Carroll & Buddy Rogers); then at 5 pm they’ll be showing The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, Sylvia Sidney), which was the first feature film to use outdoor Technicolor filming. In between those two films the gallery will also show the short comedy, Service with a Smile.
Despite the typically beautiful weather in DC this time of year, these lecture/film events usually have a capacity crowd. If you’ve got an interest in Technicolor films, film lectures, or any of these movies we encourage to get there early. These free series at the National Gallery of Art are just another reason we feel lucky to be living in and around such a great city.
