There’s Something In The Air
And we’re not talking about the fumes from the portable toilets. No matter what your political leanings are, if you’ve been out in PQ this weekend you know that the excitement is palpable. The crowds are starting to arrive, media trucks are everywhere, and seemingly every empty store front is now an Obama souvenir store. We spent Saturday wandering around the neighborhood before things get too crazy.
We started the day with hot chocolate from Gifford’s (10th & E St NW), served in their inauguration to go mug ($10). Free refills of hot chocolate through Tuesday if you buy one of these mugs, we expect you’ll see a lot of these this weekend.
Hot chocolate in hand we headed up the street to check out the newest Obama souvenir store, this one in the space formerly used by the K & B Newsstand at 10th & F St NW. That makes four new Obama stores in PQ selling inaugural gear. With the cold temps in DC this weekend we expect knit caps and sweatshirts to be big sellers.
From 10th & F we walked down to the Mall to check out the media trucks now lining our streets. TV trucks from all over the United States are readying themselves for their inauguration day broadcasts. MSNBC has been broadcasting live from a mobile studio on the Mall around 7th Street.
We know it’s not all fun for PQ residents (our current poll says the majority of you are staying at home on Tuesday), but we have to believe the inconveniences of living downtown will be worth it when all is said and done. This is one of the reasons we all moved down here right? The eyes of the world are on our neighborhood.

Make that 5 Obama souvenir stores- one more opened up next to Clara Barton (where the Dumont sales office used to be).
