Wirefly National Marathon On Saturday
This Saturday the Wirefly National Marathon takes place. The course will take racers along the southern boundary of the Penn Quarter at mile number 3 with a stretch along Constitution Avenue between 4th and 12th Streets. With a 7 am start, it shouldn’t disrupt too much traffic but remember that the race goes all over DC (pdf) and the marathon will be ongoing for six hours. Plan your errands accordingly !

race courses usually are freed up as the last runners (i.e. slowpokes) make their way through a given segment of the course. they won’t keep the entire course open for six hours. didn’t mean to imply that. but, the course does wind through other points in DC so you’ll have to do the math if you’re going through those areas.
Here is some more info.
Other than the actual marathon streets, everything should be open. If you want to drive through a marathon street, you can only use the following 5 entries/exits:
E Street Expressway (over The Roosevelt Bridge)
K Street, NW (East and West through Georgetown)
Massachusetts Avenue, NW (Over Rock Creek Parkway)
Rhode Island Avenue, NW (Across North Capitol Street)
New York Avenue, NW (Across North Capitol Street)
So, if leaving Penn Quarter, we need to drive up to NY Ave or K St to get out of the marathon loop.
you can always check in with Dr. Gridlock at the Washington Post for traffic information. man is that a corny name but it’s hard to forget!

I cannot find anything that says when specifically streets will be open and closed (besides the generic “everything closed but those 5 main streets during the 6-hour marathon.”) I suppose that might be true, but it seems unrealisitc to me.
Can I leave Penn Quarter at 10am, after everyone has come through? Or is EVERYTHING closed until 2pm??
