Nando’s Restaurant Coming To 819 7th St NW (Old Skate Shop)!

We’ve received word that Nando’s Chicken Restaurant (based out of England South Africa) will be moving into the old Asylum Skate Shop space at 819 7th St NW! Looks like they’ll be giving Hooters (825 7th) some real competition. Check out the menu (pdf). Just remember that the prices on the menu are in British pounds, not dollars.

You may have seen Nando’s sauces in Whole Foods, but this space will be a Nando’s restaurant. It is unclear if this is Nando’s’ first restaurant outside of the United Kingdom in the US. However, it is interesting that international restaurants are choosing to move into our neighborhood. German restaurant, Vapiano, is the other example (there is no time line as to when Vapiano will open on H St because the building is under extensive renovation).

We moved from DC to England last year and Nando’s is pretty tasty and a nice alternative to straight fast food and DC’s higher end restaurants. The chicken is addictive. Enjoy

Yippee! We love Nando’s in South Africa (yes, there are other Nando’s outside the UK). A great addition to the neighborhood – now with a Dunkin Donuts and a Nando’s, we’ll never leave!

Comment by Omar Musharraf on January 22, 2008 @ 9:18 am

Appreciate the info! Definitely not the first restaurant outside the UK. Nando’s is already present in the Middle East (Dubai) and even present in Pakistan!

Comment by Randy West on January 22, 2008 @ 9:21 am

I think it’ll be a great addition..

But just wait.. I can hear the typing of “OMG NOT ANOTHER CHAIN !!”..

Bring on the Chicken !!

Comment by Andy in PQ on January 22, 2008 @ 9:25 am

This sounds very promising! We need more mid-range options that aren’t burritos and burgers.

Countries where Nando’s serves Peri-Peri chicken:
South Africa – 250 restaurants
England, UK – 150 restaurants
Australia – 160 restaurants
Malaysia, Canada, Middle East, Africa – over 150 restaurants
US – our first restaurant will open in September 2008

They also had Nando’s in Bahrain, where they delivered. It was very tasty.

Looks great. However, are you sure those prices are in pounds? If so, and accounting for the exchange rate, a chicken pita with two sides would run me $20 and a chicken Caesar salad $15. Hopefully they adjust the prices in the U.S. market to make it more reasonable and to account for the weak U.S. dollar.

Comment by gpliving on January 22, 2008 @ 10:25 am

#8: The prices are in pounds, but that doesn’t mean that they will simply apply an exchange rate to get US prices. They won’t be shipping UK chicken to the US, so my guess is that prices will depend on what the US market price is for chicken, etc – like you suggest.

Comment by Loofa133 on January 22, 2008 @ 10:46 am

Nandos is Suuth African. While the South Africa strores have much better peri peri than the UK stores, its overall a good product and a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

The prices won’t be UK conversions. I mean in SA Nandos is like a buck or two for a meal. I’m sure prices will compete with Boston Market and the others.

Never heard of it but from the comments above, I can’t wait! And are you implying they will have waitresses in skimpy outfits, too (to compete with Hooters)?? oh yeah…

La Tasca and Juan Valdez are two more examples of foreign-based chains trying their luck in PQ.

Comment by anon on January 22, 2008 @ 1:12 pm

This is the kind of chain we need….like Chop’t, it looks like this place offers pretty good food, reasonably healthy options. What we don’t need are more McD’s, Burger Kings, that sort of thing. I agree with #5.

Comment by Jon on January 22, 2008 @ 2:00 pm

The Canadian site has a better price comparison — more in line with what to probably expect.

Looks like Gallery Place is becoming an international foodie hub, which would be a nice transformation from its traditional Chinatown heritage. Considering all of its varied identities, being an international restaruant destination is great for the neighborhood.

Any target date for Nando’s to open?

Comment by msu692 on January 23, 2008 @ 12:22 am

Wait – #6 up there says SEPTEMBER??? NOOOOOOOO!!!

Just returned from two years in London. Nando’s hits a wide-open spot in the market here – a real meal, relatively healthy (depending on your choices), that’s ready quickly and at a reasonable price. And it’s GOOD!

Let’s hope they open soon!

Comment by msu692 on January 23, 2008 @ 12:26 am

Oh, and as a general observation, my guess is prices in dollars will be similar to the prices in pounds on the UK menu – that seems to be the going rate in the UK (e.g., McDonald’s has a Pound Saver Menu instead of a Dollar Menu, KFC Mini Fillets – aka Snackers – are a pound, etc.). Makes it easy to forget they’re actually twice as expensive over there…

Comment by Anon on January 24, 2008 @ 8:08 am

September? I saw construction workers inside that space this morning.

Comment by Anon on January 24, 2008 @ 11:29 am

The rental agent said 6-8 months.
Nando’s here I come!!

Comment by Anonymous on January 25, 2008 @ 7:23 am

I heard that Nando’s plan to open around the middle of May and that they will be aimming around the $8-10 mark for a meal. I can’t wait for them to get here

Comment by Anon on January 25, 2008 @ 9:59 am

Anon #21, where did you hear that? I spoke to the rental agent 6-8 months from now.

Comment by B on January 28, 2008 @ 4:45 pm

Not about Nandos, but does anyone know what this new “Japanese bar and grill” on H across from Red Roof Inn is about??
