Leica Camera officially opened their first stand alone U.S. retail store last week at 977 F St NW last week filling in the last unclaimed bay in the Carroll Square development at the corner of 9th and F St NW. The store is about 2000 square feet in size and includes two separate spaces, one where the iconic cameras, binoculars, and lenses can be purchased, and another where photos can be exhibited in a gallery space. The gallery side of the store will rotate through about four exhibits per year.
Leicas are beautifully crafted cameras emanating from Germany. In our college days when our SLR cameras clattered away, we knew that somewhere there was a Leica quietly and discreetly capturing a moment due to its rangefinder form factor and lack of mirror banging around. Leica makes a range of cameras from the compact D-Lux 4 and D-Lux 5 to the M-9 rangefinder with fully interchangeable lenses. You can still buy 35 mm film cameras from Leica and they still sell an all mechanical camera, the MP, that requires no batteries to operate. The interchangeable lens system includes the standard focal lengths such as 28 mm, 35 mm, 50 mm, and 135 mm. Also in the lineup is an amazingly fast 50 mm lens with a maximum aperture of f 0.95.
The store is open Monday to Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Thursday and Friday it’s open 11 am to 7 pm. Private appointments are available 10 am to 11 am each weekday.
