RSS FeedZola Wine?
One of those pretty pink alcohol notices caught our eye next door to Bruegger’s Bagel Shop. The listing reads that the company applying is 505 9th W LLC, but it’s operating under the trade name of Zola Wine. The nature of operation is listed as “Wine store, transfer from safekeeping to a new location.” 505 9th ST appears to be the address of that entire building (at least as pictured on 9th near the corner of E) which would explain why that was the address Bruegger’s used when applying for a permit (the two entities do not appear to be related).

Is this related to Zola the restaurant? I sort of assume so since its same name and attached to the same building but hadn’t heard any mention of that?
Why don’t you shoot Doris and email letting her know about this liquor license. Then she can can get feedback from her constituents at her Single Member District meeting.

I called her 8 months after I moved into he Artisan. She had no idea she had residents in “that part of town”, and of course she never heard of the Artisan (even though the building permit had to come through her/our ANC), and she sounded like she didn’t believe it was true, even as we got off the phone. That happens when Leroy Thorpe isn’t at her side nodding in approval/disapproval.
Re: Doris Brooks, if you want a little entertainment, you should watch the video of her recent testimony regarding how the ANC functions. There is a link to it on Kevin Chapple’s web site.
Thanks for that. But Damn, I didn’t even know until it was too late that we had the opportunity to provide feedback about ANC2C. Of course I had to learn from an ANC rep. other than my own.
What kind of planning is it to give such a broad and important section of our city to a single ANC member? I just took a look at SMD 2C03 on the DC.gov site, and was absolutely shocked by the area under Ms. Brooks’s “control”. Though she lives in the district’s far northeastern block, near 5th & N NW, her district includes: the convention center, the Whitman, Techworld, Wah Luck, Gallery Place, the Verizon Center, Terrell Place, the Reynolds Center, the Artisan, the Ventana, Mather Studios, the FBI, DOJ, Archives, almost a third of the National Mall, and the dozens of restaurants and hundreds of businesses located in the several square blocks of downtown in her district.
So essentially we’re talking about billions of dollars in real estate and development projects that rely on the input of someone who lives over a mile away in a completely different neighborhood? Not to mention her apparent lack of knowledge about good policy or governance.
I sincerely hope any “input” she provides on development below NY/Mass Ave is summarily dismissed. I would love a nice wine store near my place, and although I live in the Ward 6 part of our neighborhood, I will picket her house myself if she makes a peep about Zola Wines.
#6 – I have nothing positive to say about Doris Brooks, but she was not “given” her territory.
She was elected – originally when there was nothing here – and continues to be re-elected because not enough people vote.
For example, in 2006 the result of the ANC 2C03 vote was

Hopefully in 2006 a lot of people were new to the neighborhood and did not appreciate the importance of the ANC. Here is to hoping that 2008 is a different story.

heh, and it’s in doris brooks’ single member district. i’ll bet you a million dollars she has no clue a new liquor license is moving into her district. not that it’s a bad thing, but it’s something an ANC commissioner should be on top of…
