FRESHFARM Markets Opens Farmers Market at CityCenterDC on Tuesday, June 17

Washington, DC – June 9, 2014 –FRESHFARM Markets will open its 12th farmers market this June with the opening of the FRESHFARM Market at CityCenterDC. Located at The Park at CityCenter at the corner of 10th and I Streets, N.W. the market will be open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 17th – October 28th. The market will feature ready-to-eat foods, locally grown fruits and vegetables as well as locally produced items including cured meats, breads, baked goods, kettle corn and more from FRESHFARM Markets distinguished network of farmers and artisanal producers.

“As the appetite for local food continues to grow, we are seeing an increasing demand for local and healthy ready-to-eat foods. Shoppers now come to our markets for lunch and also to pick up items for dinner,” said FRESHFARM Markets Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director Ann Yonkers. “The CityCenterDC lunchtime market will expand our offerings. More importantly by partnering with Hines, the developer of this transformational new development in the heart of the city, our farmers and producers will be playing a critical role in the continued revitalization of downtown DC.”

CityCenterDC is another opportunity for FRESHFARM Markets to bring an innovative and unique model of farmers market to downtown DC. The market will introduce neighborhood residents and professionals to an exciting collection of new and emerging local artisanal food businesses as well as high-quality local farms. What makes this kind of market unique is that the same farms who are selling to customers are also supplying the participating prepared food businesses with vegetables, cheeses, fruits and meats. Chaia DC is a great example. Launched at the FRESHFARM Market by the White House in 2013, Chaia is now widely recognized as an innovative new business whose delicious plant-based tacos are made with ingredients sourced from their fellow market farmers.

Shoppers can expect to find Black Rock Orchard, Capitol Kettle Corn, Cowbell Kitchen, Frenchie’s, Pinch hand-made Chinese dumplings, Postmodern Foods and Urban Butcher, as well as other farmers/producers to be confirmed. Highlights include:

  • Black Rock Orchard in Lineboro, Maryland is a 25 year old family fruit farm owned by the husband and wife team of Emily Zaas and David Hochheimer. They have made a name for themselves growing and selling over 18 varieties of field and tree fruit, including apples, 15 varieties of peaches and nectarines as well as greenhouse and field vegetables. Emily’s particular love is apples. Ask her any question about any of the 25 varieties of apples she grows and she will give you an expert introduction to each.
  • Capitol Kettle Corn is a veteran owned, family business offering 15+ types of kettle corn made with corn grown in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Their popcorn is a mix of kernels from Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey purchased from Reist Popcorn Company. They use a popcorn variety called mushroom popcorn, whose larger surface area is best for flavored popcorns. They specialize in sweet and savory flavors including Southern BBQ, Old Bay and Sea Salt.
  • Frenchie’s “baker makes buttery dreams come true,” said The Washington Post. Erica Skolnik, a devotee of all things butter, is the creator of one DC’s most celebrated croissants. Erica’s love for butter is what sets her croissants apart. She uses high-quality butter from Trickling Springs Creamery in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, which has a higher fat content, to make her perfectly dark golden and flaky croissants.
  • Urban Butcher, the Silver Spring, Maryland restaurant and butcher shop, known for its fresh sausages, cured meats, and artisan pâtés. Urban Butcher will offer hot sandwiches to eat on the spot alongside its signature cured meats to take home and enjoy later. All Urban Butcher charcuterie is made with local, naturally raised meats and are made in small batches.
