Howto: Finding (Cheap?) Gas

Posted by pqresident
July 9, 2008

Despite having a decidedly less expensive BMW lifestyle (bus/bike-Metro-walk) living in the PQ, there is sometimes a need for that occasional spin out to a wine festival with friends or a BJ’s run to pick up quantities of food or a command appearance at a party in Reston (ghast!). And for that, you need gas…petrol…juice.

Where are the closest fill ups to the PQ? Gas stations in Shaw, Logan and Capitol Hill top our list:

1. 9th Street BP – 1317 9th Street, NW (between N and O) – Shaw

Nearby landmarks: BeBar (bar), Vegetate (restaurant), Washington Convention Center (meeting hall, sometimes mistaken for a battleship)

2. Logan Circle BP – 1301 13th Street, NW (between N and O) – Logan – pictured above

Nearby landmarks: Mr. Wash (car wash), Logan Circle (traffic circle with a Union general in the middle)

3. Alina Enterprises Exxon – 200 Massachusetts Ave, NE – Capitol Hill

Nearby landmark: Union Station (train station)

4. Capitol Hill Exxon – 339 Pennsylvania Ave, SE – Capitol Hill

Nearby landmarks: Sonoma (restaurant), Pour House (bar)

We like two websites to help find the nearest gas stations, Gasbuddy and Mapquest’s gas price feature. Price data on both guide you in finding the nearest and cheapest gas station. Of the four stations mentioned above, the Alina Exxon in Capitol Hill always seems to suck us in (maybe it’s the ease of using Speedpass).

Got a fave fill up?

Don’t forget the BP at 15th and U…I don’t know how competitive the prices are…but if you live nearby, you basically have guaranteed cab access 24/7 which is great if you need lift somewhere.

it’s not a BP at 15th and U, though, it’s a sunoco

Comment by Kelby on July 9, 2008 @ 11:05 am

BJ’s? Really? When Costco is so close and the selection is so much better? I’m sure BJ’s is far less crowded, but there’s a reason for that. Granted I’ve only been once, to the Fair Lakes location, but it seemed to me like the consumer goods equivalent of the Syms Designer Clothing Warehouse in Falls Church.

Please let me know if there is something I’m missing out on.

Thanks for the write up. Just occured to me that there are no stations w/in PQ or the federal core of DC. Makes sense, but looking at the list, seems you don’t have to travel too far.

I’ve been stupmed looking for places to fill rental or zip cars in the city, so this helps.

I was just talking to my sister in FLA about gas prices last night. The reality is that living in downtown DC, and not owning a car, this is all just another story on the news to me.

This isn’t a holier-than-thou comment, just my reality. Sure my grocery bills are higher, but they’ve not more than doubled the way gas prices have. And driving zip cars, even when filling up the tank, I rarely pay attention to the price per gallon or the price for the tank I just filled up.

I can’t imagine how expensive gas must be for people who depend on their car for everyday transporation.

I just returned to PQ from a business trip in California where gas prices may soon hit $6 gallon. In speaking with some locals, they all agreed that the gas prices are forcing them to change their lifestyles and habits. Road trips are no longer economical.

These rising gas prices are and will continue to impact air and train travel prices as well.

The Lowest Price on New York Ave NE near Brentwood Pkwy NE may be a couple miles away, but I have yet to see it top $3.99 per gallon, so it’s often worth the drive. Just be sure to bring cash, since they don’t take credit.

good tip Andrew…thanks!

one week ago, I stood in dismay at an Exxon in North Hollywood as the pump rang up $4.69/gallon for the cheapo unleaded. how much was the good stuff? $5.09/gallon.

Yea, the Zipcar rates haven’t changed while the cost of fuel has jumped. This cannot last very long. Like you Columbo, I don’t even notice the cost of fuel for the Zipcar.

Today I spent $15 getting my bike fixed. Sure seems like a great investment!

A weekly Metro bus pass is still only $11. This is the bargain of the ciy! Ride any Metro bus, Circulator bus, or even most suburban buses all week long.

Taxi rates haven’t increase even with the fuel prices. It is still surprising cheap to get around the city via cab considering the door-to-door service. Now with meters our cabs is even customer friendly.

Plenty of ways to avoid the oil “crisis”.

Taxi fares have most certainly increased with fuel prices. You know that $1.00 fuel surcharge that has been in effect and keeps getting extended for the last 18 months or so (at least…losing track…)? Fuel prices keep going up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the surcharge go up more. Or the taxi and limousine commission (or whatever they call it here) could just raise the flag drop by a buck or more to make it permanent.
