Noise Amendment Hearing At DC City Council On July 2 At 2 PM
The Amplified Noise Amendment Act of 2018 will be up for public discussion and comment before the DC City Council’s Committee of the Whole on Monday, July 2, 2018 at 2 pm in Room 412 of the Wilson Building. The amendment text itself can be found here.
Buskers regularly ply the neighborhood as well as other parts of Washington DC with amplified sound altering the living, shopping, and dining experience. They bring gas powered electric generators onto the street to power their performances with PA systems. Some say this activity is an enhancement while others say it’s a detriment. We say it’s mostly a detriment as it degrades the livability, shopability, and dineability of the neighborhood. Imagine trying to eat at a restaurant with amplified sound coming at you at 100+ decibels. This Washington Post article also offers a view into the issue.
This is not just a Penn Quarter issue, however, and this Amendment along with stronger provisions that balance livability with rights to free and public speech are needed to restore Washington DC’s neighborhood experience back to normalcy.
We encourage affected residents and businesses to testify at the meeting to provide your input. You can also write your Councilmembers to express your views.
