The End Of The Businessman’s Special?
It’s always interesting to see who is coming out of the B & K News Stand (1004 F ST NW) at lunch time. Not that we have anything against adult entertainment, but the guys in suits who come out with their heads down, trying not to make eye contact with anyone always amuse us. If you need to pick up a video (or more) over your lunch hour you should embrace it, not hide it.
Will the businessmen of PQ have to seek their entertainment elsewhere? We first noticed this on Wednesday: it appears that the B & K News Stand is now closed for business. We’ve tried calling B & K to confirm, but no one answers.
Of course we could be wrong about the businessmen, maybe they were all just getting tattoos?

Funny in this neck of the woods the only places within walking distance to get less than a 24oz. bottle of Pepsi was B&K or Central Liquor. So my choice is left to coming out of a liquor store after lunch rather than an adult entertainment emporium.
More information in today’s Examiner article. Our very own Columbo is quoted about his observations of the store.

For additional (very interesting) details.
From the Post:
D.C. police said an 81-year-old man has been charged after investigators found 36 stun guns for sale at his news stand.
Charging documents state that a Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs inspector visited K&B News Stand in the 1000 block of F Street northwest on Oct. 2 and found the devices in a display case and called police to help identify them.
Stun guns are deemed a “destructive device” and generally banned under D.C. law.
Owner Walter Riggin turned himself in to police last week and was charged with 36 counts of possession of a destructive device.
A DCRA spokesman said Riggin’s store was not licensed to do business.
to provide a link for our readers, the Wash Post article Elaine refers to above can be found here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/27/AR2008102701193.html
interestingly, it was picked up by the Associated Press so it may get distributed far and wide.
Why is it you search high and low for a local source of destructive devices, and the whole time they are right under your nose.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

I walked by B & K on a day I had off a few weeks ago and saw a number of guys pulling stuff out of the store and loading it into a truck. It definitely had that “moving day get your stuff out” look to it so this post isn’t surprising. B & K is one of the last “old school” downtown shops that looks like it’s moving on just like Kemp Mill Records, Sunny’s Surplus and that 120/220 stereo store next to Sunny’s (now The Ventana condo) did. You can always go up to the B & K 18th Street location for their ‘Video & Variety’ if that’s your thing.
I wonder what is beneath the white (aluminum?) sheeting that covers the store’s facade. We may yet find out…it could be a nice old brick front waiting to be restored.
I’ll put in my request to the retail gods for another clothing store or perhaps a gift shop that doesn’t specialize in FBI baseball caps, ‘Future President’ T-shirts or George Washington bobble heads. I do like the tourists coming and spending their $, Euros, yen and so on in our ‘hood though.
