RSS FeedCan Obama Drive Crowds To Madame Tussauds?
It’s worth noting the premise of this post is based purely on anecdotal evidence; that evidence is that we have not seen very many people visiting Madame Tussauds (1025 F St NW) since they opened on October 5, 2007. We noticed recently that they have knocked their entry price down quite a bit and it is now only $10 for an adult admission (down from $18). Advertised as a “Special Winter Promotion,” we’re wondering if this is a sign of trouble? Our online searching shows that neither the NY or Vegas Madame Tussauds locations are offering such a deal.
We should stress we don’t want this business to fail, so we hope that their sidewalk advertising of President-elect Obama sends more customers their way. And of course our original premise could be wrong, although we walk by Madame Tussauds several times a day, perhaps we’re just missing the crowds.

For $10, it is a fun hour or so. They encourage you to take photos and even touch the figures. I know it is not a “serious museum,” but it is enjoyable and with an open mind — can be quite fun for a group of friends. Hokey, but fun.
Instead of $10 to see Branjolina on the screen, you can get a photo with them, that quite frankly, will fool about anyone who isn’t fast enough to know any better. I have a photo of my dog with the Whoopi figure they have outside during the day. My LA team thinks she really walked him! And they have worked with her.
I enjoyed a visit to the NYC Madame Tussauds a few years back. Haven’t been to the DC one. It’s not the kind of thing you really need to do more than once. But I’d go again to take visiting family if they were interested.
On the otherhand, I got a free pass to the Crime & Punishment museum a month ago. Even as someone who still watches CSI Vegas (not NYC or Mia, they are awful) and used to watch a lot of Law & Order I found the museum very vanilla and dull. Your mileage may vary.
We actually went in here on a lark last spring. It was a Sunday afternoon and not busy at all.
It was actually a lot more fun than I expected. The figures are set up for photo opportunities and they’re pretty realistic. My stepson took a photo with Tom Cruise and we sent it to a few relatives and they were all fooled 
. They had the Barack Obama figure there and it was also a good likeness.
Of course, I wish it wasn’t as expensive!!! These winter sale prices are a little more reasonable and I hope it helps their business.
I went last November and loved it, although I am a huge fan of wax museums. I had a great time with my friends. We even gave the former Mayor some rock candy…
I might even go back now that it is $10!
For $10 it is worth a visit for locals who have seen other museums in DC. On the other hand, tourist with just three days in Washington DC could invest their vacation time better.
BTW The Capitol Visitor Center is grand, free, and requires no tickets! Tours of the Capitol require a timed ticket which is free. If you haven’t taken a tour recently, they now have headsets for each group so you can actually hear your tour guide. Caution: The cafe in the Visitor Center is both high end and high price.
Completely agree with Tour Guide. My wife and I went for free with our Newseum membership. We’ve seen and done DC over the past 12+ years, so it was neat to see. For tourists with limited time to spend, MT wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the list of things to do.
