RSS FeedPQ’s New Police Week: Inaguration Week? Bars & Clubs Open 24 Hours
This piece of news is starting to make its way around the Internets (from the WaPo):
Under emergency legislation approved by the D.C. Council yesterday, any District establishment with a liquor license, including restaurants and nightclubs, will be allowed to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. — three hours later than usual — and serve food round-the-clock from Jan. 17 until the morning after Obama’s swearing-in on Jan. 20.
Mayor Fenty asked the council to exclude nightclubs from the legislation, however the nightclubs were still included.

Someone in the DCist comments suggested that people don’t need to rent a hotel room or apartment anymore – they can just take a nap in the corner of the 24 hour bar!
More importantly — will we have breakfast specials in restaurants in our neighborhood starting at 4 a.m. on the 20th? That would be a great thing for the masses of folks heading into our area early for the Inaugural. That would make the all-night hours well worth it. How about it PQ restaurants?
This should be sehr fun! I might have to take the week off work and party with all the random celebrators! It’s always fun to meet new, random people!
It will be fun; it’d be better if Metro runs all night; otherwise, it’ll be a little iffy on the streets. & heck yes, if you really wanted to party, no hotel needed, just party all night, or till 5 a.m., then breakfast at one of the 24-hour diners, then start the party again at 8 a.m. You can easily go two nights w/o sleep. & odds are, with that much drinking going on, you’ll meet a local femme fatale, & then you’ll have a crib after all.
Meanwhile, I’ll be snug as a bug in a rug with my GF in our love nest. Nevertheless, please be aware that we in the far left wing are planning to demonstrate against Barak, since we believe he’s sold us down the river with these “centrist” [aka right-wing] appointments – but that’s for my political blog.
I’m pretty stoked about this. DC will finally be a 24-hour city!
As for the demonstrators… are you serious? Guess all that talk of unity was just campaign fodder.
The only “emergency” about this legislation that the Council snuck thru is the emergency it will create in the community. There are serious public safety consequences from leaving bars open all night: drunk people are sitting ducks for mugging and other crimes, drunk driving will increase, etc. And there will certainly be a lot of noise, all night, in our neighborhood. We should Jack Evans, the shill of the restaurant owners who sponsored this legislation; Tommy Wells, who represents much of PQ, and the at large members of the Council – Kwame Brown, Phil Mendelson, and Carol Schwartz, with emails ask for reconsideration and repeal of this “emergency” law. It’s a really bad idea – shame on them. (Fenty and Lanier opposed – glad there are some sensible people in the city government.)
Hopefully some emergency funding increases for extended DCPD patrol went along with this emergency legislation to help protect our streets.
