The Marvelous Market Mystery Unfolds
As we were all busy discussing what may have caused Marvelous Market to close, one thought never surfaced during the discussion: an aggressive buyout.
This blogger has been notified of a discussion between the Marvelous Market manager and a neighbor that was in the 7th Street store hours before it closed. The manager was walking around with a clipboard and told this neighbor that the store was closing. The manager also volunteered that Marvelous Market was offered beaucoup bucks in a buyout bid by an entity that wanted the Marvelous Market space. Of course, details are sparse in trying to identify the buyout entity, but if this info is true (at least this info comes from a known reliable source), it may not be too long before we see that prime retail space filled back up!

Back to the Balducci’s space for a sec: people are talking about Walgreens coming in there like it’s a done deal. Did I miss something? Is that true? I thought JPI was deciding among three or four restaurant bidders.
(BTW, I had a dream last night that Walgreens opened a store in that space, but when I went there it was actually an offshoot called “WLGRN,” and it was an upscale gourmet market! I was so overjoyed. I was like, “What was everyone so worried about?” and then I woke up.)
Asssuming that the grocery store that I’ve been looking forward to for the last 4-5 years really is no longer an option, I’m actually hoping that it’ll be Walgreens. A large-format Walgreens will be a lot more useful to the neighborhood than more restaurants. Hopefully the Walgreens will carry an expanded non-perishable grocery and dairy selection, and some hardware-related items as well.
Would that be like the Rite Aide on Connecticut and Florida? That store is so much better than the CVS stores in our neighborhood.

Is that space big enough for a fast food restaurant? Does it even have a kitchen & ventilation in the back?
GPliving: I think the space is indeed big enough for a fast food joint. Given how many restaurants are in the complex, the whole 7th Street Historic Row probably has ventilation. As sad as it sounds, Popeye’s wouldn’t surprise me at all. I know lots of people who have been looking for fried chicken downtown since the Popeye’s closed at 11th & F to make way for Jemal’s new development. And Popeye’s has probably been looking for a way back in, too.
CBD: Based on all the lovely gossip floating around, it does indeed appear that Walgreen’s is a done deal. Especially look at James Duncan’s disheartening response to andy in pq, and jon gann’s big secret that he finally let out of the bag (after it had been well-circulated on this blog, natch).
The Rite Aid at Connecticut and Florida is truly amazing. A Walgreen’s like that (esp if 24 hour) would definitely dull the pain of this wound (which will not be forgotten soon, JPI!!).

This may be a totally unsubstantiated rumor, but I heard that Trader Joe’s may be considering moving into the almost 9000 sq feet of retail space at 1010 Mass, which is under construction now.
I have already emailed Trader Joe’s encouraging them to consider that space, and if this is something you’re interested in, you should too. That said, I am pretty sure that 1010 Mass does not have any additional parking other than parking for unit owners, so I don’t know if TJs (or any other grocery store) would actually move into that space. I hope so though…

Let’s hope so! It’s not a huge space, but I could imagine lots of fast-food-type restaurants want a presence on that strip.
