Fire This Morning At 1000 F St NW (Joe’s Souvenir HQ)
We heard via DCist and WTOP this morning that there was a fire in one of the two-story buildings on the 1000 block of F St NW. There are only three two-story buildings on that block: Joe’s Souvenir Headquarters, the old K & B Newsstand, and the Downtown DC BID office. Notice the black residue and broken windows on the second floor of right side of the corner building.
Also, the folks at DCFD already have pictures of the fire and a complete description of the incident on their website!
Below is a file photo of the same facade (left side of pic) a little over a month ago.
Meanwhile, workers were bringing sheets of plywood and other materials into the building next door (old K & B Newsstand, 1004 F St NW). We’re not really sure why workers would be bringing materials into the old K & B Newsstand since that building is supposed to be demolished to make room for a Douglas Development 11-story office building.

it was quite a scene. I don’t think the fire was all that catastrophic but the fire response was quite robust. There were probably 3 or 4 full sized fire trucks plus it seemed like a dozen small vehicles – ambulance, Fire Chief SUVs, etc.
The coolest thing i saw was called a “Recovery Truck” or something like that. Official fire department design and colors but it was basically a large (clean) version of one of those construction site lunch trucks with a big awning that folded out and it was giving out coffee, gatorade, water, power bars, etc. to the firemen. It also had a stretcher / cot under the awning presumably if any of the firemen needed attention.
