Third Penn Quarter Gym Coming In July…
Those 7th Street retail spaces across from the Hotel Monaco can count one less empty window. BodySmith Gym will take up residence at 575 7th Street and open its doors in July. It strikes GP Living that it will have many of the same features that Vida Fitness has also. The first gym to open in the Penn Quarter was the Washington Sports Club in Gallery Place. A little competition is always healthy but do we need three gyms in two blocks?

I’ve never been to BodySmith, but it seems like their facilities are more geared towards one-on-one personal training. Whereas Vida seems like more of a traditional gym that offers personal training on the side.
I would love to hear more thoughts about these gyms popping up in the neighborhood. Personally, I’d like a place with an indoor basketball court and some tennis courts, but that is probably wishful thinking.
If people like unique and independent, and want to try something new, there is a local boxing coah who has a small gym. Real old school. Great workout. Trains women and men. And in our neighborhood! http://www.downtownboxing.com
Also, let’s not forget that the YWCA is over at 9th and G streets. And they have an actual indoor swimming pool, not an “endless pool.” So that brings the total number of gyms in the neighborhood to 4.
The YWCA is definitely the best deal. I got a mailer from them advertising a “couple’s membership” for $70 a month (total), in which each person can select one part of the gym they’d like to access (aquatics, group fitness, and everything else).
Which residence do you think has the best gym? I am a fan of the Lansburgh’s stainless steel pool, but the rest is pretty boring. I hear Clara Barton/Lafayette has a cool gym – can anybody comment?

Yeah, it does seem a little repetitive. However, maybe it is just following the trend of the 5,000 coffee establishments in our neighborhood. 4 starbucks, Juan Valdez, Shimba Hills… I would like to see a few more independent and unique retail establishments open up. However, at least things are opening up rather than closing down.
