Group Therapy
After dinner at Kushi this past Sunday night (off topic, but we highly recommend drinking the Hitachino Ancient Nippon while available; it’s 18 ounces of beer-bliss), we wandered out to discover what we believe was an open mic night at Busboys & Poets. We don’t want to comment much on the quality of what we listened to for the simple fact that we’re not really poetry people. Our experience with poetry is limited to our college days of trying to impress the coffee shop waitress with off-hand comments about spoken word jazz.
But those performing seemed earnest if nothing else, especially when it came to airing their feelings towards their parents (cathartic, no doubt). And while we admit to not being the best judges of poetry, we can certainly appreciate how difficult it must be to open yourself up like that to strangers.
As this was the first poetry event we’ve ever seen in the PQ it made us wonder if there were venues other than Busboys and Poets for such events. We thought the Chinatown Coffee Company might offer an open mic night for aspiring poets, but didn’t see anything like that on their website. Do any of our more artistically inclined readers know of other greater-PQ open mic options?
