CityVista Update (Safeway ETA, Busboys & Poets)

Posted by gpliving
March 8, 2008

We have a couple of updates regarding retail at the CityVista project at 5th & K St NW.

Life in Mt. Vernon Square has the scoop on the Safeway opening date. It may open as early as June or as late as late July, early August September. The issue that affects Safeway’s opening date is whether or not they decide to put in a drop ceiling. No drop ceiling means, a June opening!

While we’re on the topic of CityVista, a building permit was approved on 02/12/08 for the Mt. Vernon Triangle outpost of Busboys & Poets! For those not familiar with Busboys, it is a local chain that rolls up a lounge, restaurant, cafe, coffee shop, and bookstore all into one cozy place.

If you read the comment section — Safeway has said that it will open in September. We will need the police in this area for another summer before we get life in this area.

Thanks Peter, we missed that one.

September of what year? 2011?

(Sorry, just grouchy and in need of groceries today)

Busboys and Poets!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!!!!! This will be a terrific addition to the greater Penn Quarter neighborhood, so much more interesting than the endless stream of high-end restaurants…enuf already of those.

agree with #4.

I love the high end restaurants. I just think we need a mix, the Triangle is a perfect place for this since it’s going to be markedly more residential in nature.

YAY for the Triangle!

p.s. I’m moving back to the penn quarter soon!
woohooooo.

At residents are finally beginning to acknowledge that we are getting a grocery store in the area! (Yeah, yeah, I know, but not technically in the “Penn Quarter,” as if that matters.)

Anon # 6, it matters if you are lugging groceries, need one or two items only and looking for a place close-by with a decent salad bar, sandwiches, opened in the evening and to be able to say hi to your PQ neigbors. It maters a lot.

Bed, Bath and Beyond sells some wonderful carts for groceries #7. We Triangle residents consider ourselves part of PQ. Please don’t disown us!!

Speaking of grocery carts, I really want one with swivelly wheels. Has anyone been able to find one?

#7, Sheesh, I guess that somebody was bound to bring up this old “we need a grocery store” stuff. How far do you think the new store is from Gallery Place? You’ll have one! And lots of your neighbors (PQ and Mt. Vernon) will be at the new store, so get your walking legs out and stroll a few blocks. There’s not enough business downtown to support a grocery store every few blocks; if there were, they’d be here already. No, the Safeway won’t be central to everyone. but it’ll be much closer to you than someone on the farther boundaries of the “Penn Quarter.” Good grief; appreciate what we’re getting!

Have you seen the Hammacher Schlemmer grocery cart model with hooks to hang the plastic or canvas bags? Much more sleek and useful. Carries 70 pounds as well.

And dear #7, we folks in the Triangle regularly walk ALL the way to Bed Bath and Beyond and even to the Farmers Market to shop. We find it convenient. You’ll get used to it. We’re really not out of the way for PQ residents.

#7. Geez! I cannot believe how lazy and spoiled people are getting, to the point where one cannot not walk a few blocks to the grocery store???? You’ve got to be kidding me…

A grocery store is rarely going to be in your backyard, no matter where you live. IT will always be too far for someone.

A Penn Quarter Resident living the furthest from the Safeway should not have more than a 10 or 15 minute walk. The ones who don’t like to walk will drive. (Us walkers will pass them by with groceries in tote as the drivers sit in traffic).

There are plenty of ways to bring your groceries home on wheels. Use a rolling suitcase or rolling back pack, if you don’t want to use a granny basket. Be creative.
The walk will you do you good and the groceries can take the place of walking with weights. It is great exercise.

The new Safeway serves a large section of the “downtown/uptown/intown” community. It can’t open soon enough. Forget the ceiling and open.

I am sure that I will still continue to pick up items at Trader Joes and Harris Teeter, as one grocery store never has everything.
