Another Sushi Option For The PQ
The WaBizJo is reporting that a new installation of Wasabi, the sushi conveyor belt restaurant on Farragut Square, is being planned for the Penn Quarter in early 2009. This version of the restaurant will get a bar and count ’em, not one but two sushi conveyor belts.

First it was tapas. Now sushi. This neighborhood is a trend magnet. How long before cupcakes and pinkberry like froyo follow?
Asian Spice is open, with sidewalk seating. Haven’t looked at the menu, so I don’t know if there is sushi.
we’re wondering about Sei and Ray also. their websites are up but only have a splash screen going and nothing else – no menus nor opening dates. we’ve peered in to the spaces and see work in progress but nothing more. maybe some gumshoeing is in order.
I went to Asian Spice this weekend – good sushi (I had maki, didn’t try any nigiri) and reasonably priced. The staff seemed eager to please, almost nervous.
The prospect of a decent sushi restaurant in PQ is a very good thing. I may have been spoiled by California, but sushi in this area generally stinks. I’ll take anything that’s half way decent.
Sushi Ko in Glover Park is the best sushi restaurant in DC, as good as anything found in California, or anywhere outside of Japan for that matter. The sushi-go-round place is cute, but it’s not top quality sushi.
You’re right, generally the go-round sushi is never the best. I’ll take your advice and try Sushi Ko. I’m still keeping my expectations low. “Good” sushi restaurants in DC try to be good by having hype and style without substance. In CA it’s an art, generally family run, small, and simple. No hype, just good sushi.
I’ve never been to Sushi Ko so I can’t comment on it, but I think Kaz Sushi (on 19th & I) is the best available downtown.
Maybe I need to open my eyes a bit and try both before I make more blanket statements? Thanks for another recommendation. I’ll give it a try.
Stopped by Organic To Go at 13th and F yesterday. Is it new? Sandwich was just ok, but nothing special for $8+.
My husband and I were very excited with the opening of Asian Spice in the neighborhood. Since we have an Asian palate and eat out often it could easily become a regular meal. Unfortunately, I got sick the first night we tried it (thinking it was the saki). We tried it again, my husband (no food allergy) and I both got sick. Twice in the same week!
Ben-
There can never be too many as long as the neighborhood is willing to diversify. If we could get a tapas place, then everything will be complete!
Kaz, owner of Kaz Sushi Bistro used to be the head sushi chef at Sushi Ko, which has great sushi in Cleveland Park and in its new place in Friendship Heights (Tom Sietsema just reviewed it last Sunday). Their yellow tail neck –or was it shoulder — was also fabulous.
another excellent DC sushi restaurant is Makato on MacArthur Blvd.
But, if you don’t have a car, though not as close as Cleveland Park or MacArthur Blvd, the Friendship Heights Sushi-Ko is Metro accessible.
In Penn Quarter I have liked the sushi at Oya.
Jo-Ann,
Please don’t sell Makoto short. It is superior, not just excellent.
But, there is also a hidden treasure above Makoto – a small family-owned sushi restaurant that is very very affordable and very good quality.

And what about Sei? Every day I walk past the site on 7th Street longingly…..I see the permit notice in the window, but no clues as to when they will actually open.
