Competition For Sushi-Go-Round
What comes around goes around and that is certainly true if you are a fan of conveyor belt or kaiten sushi restaurants. Gallery Place’s very own Sushi-Go-Round now has conveyor belt competition in the form of Wasabi on Farragut Square (908 17th St, NW). The quiet, intimate vibe at Wasabi is reinforced by the smaller interior of the restaurant space and the sushi is fresh and imaginative; take out is available from the refrigerated cases found near the entrance. Also, drink prices are reduced daily during happy hour. The down side? Wasabi isn’t open on weekends.

I made the terrible mistake of ordering something from the menu at Sushi-go-Round. It took over an hour, three reminders to the server, and what I finally received was only three bites. No discount or anything. Yet another disappointing experience at a D.C. restaurant :-/
In Tom Sietsma’s online chat this past Wedensday, he also expressed dissapointment with Sushi-Go-Round.
I have had some decent experiences with Sushi-Go-Round, although I have not eatnen there in the last few months. Has anything changed in their kitchen? Perhaps they are not bringing in fresh fish enough? I think it is worth asking the owner while we trash his restaurant to see if there is an explaination. It seems to be a family-owned restaurant and the people who work there are very nice; please remember this is Chinatown and they are (thankfully) not a chain restaurant. I am curious if the people in the kitchen were trained in Japan (the owners are Thai).

Having been to both, I must say there isn’t much of a competition. Wasabi wins hands down. The sushi is fresher and doesn’t taste as if it was 2 day old fish. There are more choices- Wasabi’s conveyor belt features cooked foods and desert also.
