Art On Foot: Man With A Briefcase Standing Tall (7th And G St NW)
It showed up last fall with no name, a tall sculpture on the grounds of the American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery in the 7th and G St NW corner of the property. Then the plaque appeared and we learned that this 26 2/3 foot tall piece of Cor-Ten steel is aptly named ‘Man with a Briefcase‘ and it’s by sculptor Jonathan Borofsky. The piece was created between 1987 and 1988 and it has a rusted patina along with the number 3277542 etched on one pant leg. This sequence number is his rendering of his signature.
Borofsky’s work can be very tall, in some cases hitting 100 feet tall. Other men with briefcases exist by Borofsky in Fort Worth, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota. We like the work as it seems to be keeping watch over our neighborhood. It also has a g-man sensibility to it which is appropriate for the nation’s capital, the seat of the Federal government and the FBI.
