Charmed, I’m Sure
This past weekend we stopped by Central Liquors (625 E St NW) to pick up a six pack (Czechvar, the original Bud) when we discovered that Central Liquors is under new management. More to the point, Central Liquors is no longer owned by the Wine Brothers; it was sold about a week ago and is now owned by Central Wines, a Limited Liability Company formed in November of 2010.
Our first experience with the new owners was true to their outside advertising, they really are charming. Genuinely excited, the new owners were all smiles as we chatted about their purchase. While you can’t expect changes to happen overnight, Central Liquors (to be renamed Central Wines?) is moving in the right direction.
The new owners are open later and working to reorganize the store with new offerings. Although we always liked the previous owners, the Wine Brothers were not revered for their charm. We recommend you stop by and meet the new owners, who have promised improvements to the store as they start to make it their own.

I’m glad it’s under new ownership, but I didn’t find the wine brothers mean. Their move to the new locations seemed though to be halfhearted. The inventory was pathetic. Vodkas are a big seller in any liquor store, but they only seemed to carry odd stuff that looked like it would accelerate cirrhosis of the liver, or blind you.
The new owners are very friendly and and reached out to me the first time. They were open to suggestions and promised that they were in the process of stocking the store better. They have a great location, and I wish them luck.
not quite sure who Mr./Ms. In The Know is but it sounds like hearsay to me.
I bought soda, wine, and beer from Central periodically and never found the staff to be mean. it did take a little “getting to know ‘ya” time for them to warm up but once you got to know them and they you, they were happy to help when asked.
I wish the old and new owners the best success possible. will be checking out how the new store evolves with interest.
There was just one negative comment @DCZen, and three out of four comments found them friendly. Case closed.
Yep, I used to live next door to them at their old location. They’d always say hello and ask if they could help me find anything, and made a few special orders for me.
While we’re spreading hearsay one of them indicated the reason for their move was that the old landlord jacked up the rent, but I certainly can’t verify that.
Chalk me up as one who found the old/former guys arrogant and rude. The 2 times I went in to the old location, they acted like what I was requesting was beneath them and basically came out and said that I didn’t know anything about wine (which, joke’s on them – I actually know quite a bit). I’m glad to hear the new guys are supposed to be friendly, esp. since they’re now right across the street from me!
The old guys are nice guys. They moved because the rent was jacked to almost $20k a month. The new spot is way better and with better inventory (which was an issue) will succeed in the similar fashion to Schneiders and pearsons.
I felt like O Dog in Menace to Society the way those former owners followed me around the store every time I came in. Glad to see them go.
Pearson’s is a Washington institution. the service at Schneider’s is always excellent. it would be great to hit that kind of stride downtown.
I was not a fan. They had bad inventory and a lack of desire to improve it as demand for interesting liquors increased. Modern is much better! Glad to hear about the change.
im excited to welcome new neighbors.. but will miss the old… although ..i never was really happy that they moved into that new space… i loved the gallery and was realllllly hoping a new one would move in… maybe the new owners will make a wee better use of those gorgeous windows!
welcome!

New owner alert. I went in yesterday to purchase liquor and found the price has increased over $7.00 for something I buy often. Other local stores sell the same product for $12 less, $13 less, etc. I was stunned and shared my view with the cashier who promised to share my concern with the owner. I cannot shop there with pricing like that.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Thank goodness. The old owners were just plain mean. Plus, from what I know from landlords and those in the know, they were late on their rent for many months -in both the old location and the new one.
I believe the new owners also own Modern Liquors up the street. They are eager to fill special orders, give generous case discounts, and are very knowledgable. Maybe this will save me a few block walk up to 9th and N.
