Daily Candy: Asia 9 Opens Tomorrow

Posted by PQGirl
March 12, 2008

After much speculation, the Washington D.C. edition of the popular Daily Candy is reporting Penn Quarter’s Asia 9 will open tomorrow March 13, 2008. This is by no means confirmed, but perhaps one of our readers can shed some light on the subject. Below is Daily Candy’s description of the new hotspot.

The grandiose space, which opens tomorrow, houses a bright red sushi bar in front, a mauve and gold dining room, a granite-topped bar, and a posh VIP room with its own bar on the second floor. Oh, and don’t forget the eight-foot-tall figure “9.”

The menu nods to Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Thai cuisines. Sushi lovers will appreciate creative combos like the Red Stone Roll, which gets crunch from spicy tuna tempura. For the squeamish, there are curries, salads, and the soy-glazed Salmon en Papillote.

Throw in 40 sake varieties and seductive desserts, and one thing’s clear. It all adds up to something good.

Asia Nine, 915 E Street NW, between 9th and 10th Streets (202-629-4355).

They had an event at Asia 9 last night, still some work to be done inside but looks almost complete. Any readers go to the party last night?

Another thought, was anyone else surprised to see that Asia 9 has a second floor?

Columbo, why is that surprising?

I live in the Artisan and saw about 30 diners in there last night. I assumed it was a “soft launch” except that they did have the valet station already open. There were also some stacks of construction equipment visible by the bar so that also let me to believe it was a private or soft launch. Special note: PLEASE if you are driving to this restaurant and waiting for the valet, do not block the private gate between the restaurant and McD’s. This is going to be a huge issue residents will have to deal with Asia 9 directly on.

#5, walking by I assumed it was only the ground floor. It looked like the Artisan above it had the second floor.

fyi my doorman spoke to one of the contractors working on the Sei restaurant space, and he said they were planning on opening mid-summer, not March as has been publicized.

Poked my head into Asia9 on my way past this evening. Looked terrific. It was quite empty, but it was only about 6:15pm. I am sure it will pick up as people hear about it (assuming of course the food is good).

Went by for a few drinks last night. Filled up quickly and the sushi was excellent. Still working out the kinks (e.g. wouldn’t take credit cards) but were gearing up for a full day of reservations. Definitely recommended. Can’t wait to see the 2nd floor.

They do takeout! They had takeout menus at the hostess stand yesterday. Today, when someone came in to get a menu, they were given the actual lunch menus! I’m enjoying the Warm Spinach Salad as I type this. A party of 6 came in while I was waiting and they were seated quickly, but the restaurant had a nice number of people for Day 2. Apparently word is spreading fast! They are also part of OpenTable.com for reservations. Their website is AsiaNine.com
