We took a week off from Heard In The ‘Hood so we’re dividing it up into sections. Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!

Tips? Send them in confidentiality to: pqliving [at] gmail.com

Neighborhood…

Penn Quarter - The Martin Luther King library (901 G St NW) celebrates its 40th year of operation starting tomorrow. There are activities and events all week long including a block party on Saturday, August 25. We always enjoy a visit here to take out those free DVD movies…it’s how we catch up on our back catalog. [MLK Library 40th anniversary website]

Penn Quarter – Performance street parking is coming to our neighborhood thanks to a $1M grant from the Federal Highway Administration. Yes…there will be an app for that. [WaPo - District of DeBonis]

Real Estate…

Penn Quarter - Donald Trump talks more about what he plans for the Old Post Office redevelopment in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Ave NW. The over the top snapshot? A 261 room deluxe hotel with three restaurants, spa, lounge, 35,000-square-foot banquet facilities and a curated museum dedicated to the building’s history and the Congress Bell. [WaPo]

Penn Quarter – Ding, ding! Class will soon be in session at the Basis charter school at 410 8th St NW between D and E Streets starting August 27. It’s great to have kids in the neighborhood! Here’s more about the school’s secret sauce. [WaPo] & [BASIS DC website]

Restaurants…

Penn Quarter – Speaking of the Old Post Office building, the early reviews are in on Del Frisco’s Grille which took Les Halles’ place at 1201 Pennsylvania Ave NW. [Eater DC] & [WaPo]

Penn Quarter – District of Pi (912 F St NW) turns off their food truck to focus on their bricks and mortar restaurant. [Food Truck Fiesta]

Downtown - The proprietor of Zengo signs for a space at 1300 Eye St NW presumably for Toro Toro, a pan-Latin restaurant concept. [Washington Business Journal] & [Eater DC]

Penn Quarter/Golden Triangle – Amorini Panini will be opening a second location at 801 18th St NW near the World Bank. Amorini’s food truck continues operating as it has been. [Washington Business Journal]

Penn Quarter – Social Reform (401 9th St NW) will be getting a new awning. We’ve eaten at the bar a few times and enjoy the rerigged menu and happy hour. [Zagat]

Downtown – The folks from Againn gastropub are opening a coffee/casual eats shop called Bean & Bite at 1152 15th St NW (between L and M St). [Thrillist]

Penn Quarter/Chinatown - The crew at Daikaya shares a few photos of construction of the space at 705 6th St NW. They also have a log up on their Facebook masthead. [Daikaya Facebook page]

Shootings…

Penn Quarter - A man accidentally shot himself in the leg during a scuffle in front of or inside the Verizon Center McDonald’s (601 F St NW). [WaPo] & [DCist]
