Tied To A Hitching Post
This probably isn’t what the property owners on 8th street had in mind when they recently installed new tree box fences from CVS down to the Lansburgh entrance. As dog owners we know this is a not-too-subtle way of saying “keep your dog out of the box.” Nonetheless, we applaud this particular move as it solves what was for us an occasional inconvenience: The single dog hitching post.
Prior to the installation of these tree boxes, there was only one good tree outside of CVS to tie your dog to when running errands. There are other trees (and a few other structures) nearby, but typically the other options were no good because of discarded food, garbage, or other items you wouldn’t want to leave your dog exposed to. If you walked by and another dog was tied to this tree, you were out of luck until the owner returned and left with their dog.
That problem (ok, it only happened to us once) is now solved. With this new fencing there are now plenty of safe places to hitch your poocha while you run into CVS. On the tree box directly in front of CVS alone you could tie up a whole gang of man’s best friends. And those big CVS windows looking out onto 8th street mean you can always keep an eye on things outside if you’re the worrying type.
The battle between dog owner and those who guard the tree boxes will no doubt continue on, but in this instance we think both parties win.

not trying to gang up here but the grass in the new park and lawn across from the Moultrie Courthouse is now dotted with brown patches. People were lunching in the grass when it first opened but not so much now.
Doggies has to go but couldnt they go on fire hydrants and barked areas that dont ruin our first new park in a long time. Is the solution a dog park in the back part of that park or somewhere nearby?
We do need a dog park in the neighborhood — the one at 11th and Rhode Island is a little bit of a schlep for those w/o cars. Unfortunately, most of the green space in the area is federal land — so no go. Anyone have suggestions for spaces?
@Jon, what do you mean “most of the green space in the area is federal land — so no go”? You mean we can’t take it over for a dog park, or you can’t take your dog there at all? Because I’ve been taking my dog to the Mall for a long time.
Dogs are taking a toll on the grass on the lawn on the west side of the courthouse, but I think most of the brown right now might be from drainage issues (the lawn is on top of a parking garage). After rain, pools of water are forming that take days to dry and kill the grass in the meantime.
From what I’ve gathered, it’s illegal to have dogs on GSA controlled federal property but it’s ok to have (leashed) dogs on NPS property.
What I meant is that it is impossible to create a dog park on federal (GSA/NPS) land. Since most of the green space in the hood fits in this category — we are limited as to where to put one.

Although it seems harmless enough, please do not tie up and leave dogs unattended outside businesses. It leaves the dog very vulnerable to being taken (which has happened around Dupont Circle).
