Downtown Holiday Market Starting Late Next Week

Holiday Market Logo

Yes, it’s that time festive time of year again and it wouldn’t be downtown or the Penn Quarter if we didn’t have the downtown holiday market publicity machine fired up and running. Last year, this writer stumbled across some good finds for both the gals (stinky…I mean aromatic candles) and the guys (wood business card holders). There will be more than 100 exhibitors (including 40 local exhibitors) such as crafters of jewelry, textiles, cultural crafts, paintings, prepared foods, knits and more. Food will be available for purchase and live music will round out the atmosphere.

Vendors will set up in the National Portrait Gallery “Plaza” at 7th and F Streets, NW from December 7 through December 23, open Noon to 8 pm each day.

PQ Living was there last year and we’ll be there this year too looking for fun gifts. Come downtown and get some holiday cheer…see you there!

Downtown Holiday Market
Friday, December 7th – Sunday, December 23rd
12:00 Noon-8:00 pm daily
F Street between 7th and 8th Streets, NW
(Adjacent to the Smithsonian Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture; across from the Verizon Center and Gallery Place Metro)

Will there be real Christmas trees for sale at the market? Or Hannukah bushes? Or shall I simply call them evergreen trees? ;-) Although I don’t celebrate anything, I love getting a tree. My cats enjoy climbing it.

I love this market. I saw it every night last year as I was coming home from work, and it really got me in the holiday mood. I hope they have more food and drink this year. I love the Christmas markets in Europe where you can get hot mulled wine and warm little treats.

#2 – I know, the gluvein in the Vienna Christmas market is one of my favorite memories. I can’t wait for this market to open!

Anyone that went last year – are the same vendors there throughout the entire duration?

#1: Two years ago, when the holiday market was at the old convention center parking lot, they were selling trees. I can’t remember if they were last year.

I noticed a sign posted in the Lafayette elevator stating live Christmas trees are not allowed! Does anyone know why?

Comment by J on November 29, 2007 @ 4:22 pm

Spoke to the coordinator of the Holiday Market: No live trees this year. He suggested going to Eastern Market.

Comment by Enthusiastic Atheist on November 29, 2007 @ 6:21 pm

#7: Thanks for the live tree information. It’s kinda tricky to bring a tree home on the metro from Eastern Market. Bummer! Well, I’ll go for a small one or perhaps splurge on a taxi (but, I’m not sure the taxi driver will appreciate all the pine needles).

Merry Hanukwanzamas!

PQ newbie- I’ve lived in places where live christmas trees weren’t allowed. They can be fire hazards, especially if they don’t get enough water and then dries out.

What about Festivus poles?!

Comment by pqresident on November 30, 2007 @ 1:26 pm

once lit, a dried out, real Xmas tree turns into a flame ball quickly. they’re a hastle to dispose too (burned or not) for an apartment community and the trash haulers alike.

I am looking forward to the market. We just came back from Germany and France and many of the markets were already getting started.

I hope that our market will offer more food treats than last year, as this makes it even more fun.

Number 10…Loved your comment…a festivus pole is just right for small places.
