Fun Fair Protest Set For Next Week

Posted by pqresident

Fun Fair Video at 919 5th Street is getting some attention these days. It was a discussion item at this week’s DNA meeting. It was on WJLA Channel 7’s website (we’d embed the video but the new WJLA site doesn’t allow it). It’s up on the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Association website. And, it will be the object of a nieghborhood protest (see the flyer shown above).

This business is just north of the PQ and is near the under construction Safeway anticipated to open next year. The organizing meeting is tonight and the protest is set for next Monday, September 17th.

Ed. Note: Below we link to media coverage of the rally on the 17th:

WJLA Channel 7 News – Residents to Hold a Rally to Close Fun Fair

The rally was also profiled on the evening of the 17th on WTTG Channel 5’s Edge which is their 11 pm news broadcast and WRC Channel 4’s 11 pm broadcast.

As a resident at 555 Mass, I had a flyer stuck underneath my door. I would like to be there but may not be able to, I hope this works so we can shut that place down along with the strip club and liquor store.

I’m a resident at 555 and will definitely be there on Monday. We only have one bite at this apple. We need to show that we are a real community that has a voice. Look forward to taking control of this neighborhood finally. We live in a blighted area.

Kudos to this organization for putting together the rally. Grassroots community activism at its best! When the cops won’t get out of their cars, the residents pick up the slack. That area is a hotbed of crime, and getting rid of one nuisance will definitely help chip away at the problem.

Good for them, but they better not come after the “Adult Action Martial Arts Video” place on 6th & H. My parents get a chuckle out of the sign every time they visit.

Comment by Si Kailian on September 13, 2007 @ 10:38 pm

hey if they’ve got a license and there are no body fluids on the floor, more power to em!

I encourage everyone to come out to this rally on monday at 6pm, its going to be …something! we spent the evening making plans & making signs…

You can learn more about the situation and send a quick e-mail to your city officials at http://www.mountvernonsquare.org/action/.

The Fun Fair is also selling drug paraphanaelia and running a gambling operation. It blows my mind that it is allowed to exist!

Comment by Rob on September 16, 2007 @ 9:34 pm

Thanks for the post. Shall be there.

Comment by Kimberly on September 17, 2007 @ 2:50 pm

I’ll be there as well. Renting in 400 Mass Ave right now and the flyers were abundant in the mail room. Moving to City Vista next year once building is complete and would love to see this place go down.

All,

We got lots of results from this grassroots effort. Check out Mount Vernon Square’s blog http://lifein.mountvernonsquare.org/ for more info.

Completely off topic, but does anyone know how that building that was left in place in the middle of the new construction on Mass Ave came to be that way?

The one I’m refering to is labeled Lido Pizza Coming Soon.

Just curious.

Read about the building here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/02/AR2006050201430.html
You can also search this board for Ledo Pizza and you’ll find more information on the status of the permit, building, etc.
