Historic Preservation Review Board – Downtown Update

Posted by gpliving
September 11, 2006

We have 4 items on the agenda for the next HPRB meeting on Sept 28.

  • The Bulletin Building, 717 6th Street, NW, Case #06-08 (ANC 6C) is nominated to become a Historic Landmark
Formerly Coyote Ugly, 717 6th is now the home of RNR Bar & Lounge. Looks like this establishment is already open!
  • 600 Massachusetts Avenue, NW (and 609-631 I Street, NW), HPA #06-289, concept/demolition, new construction
This is the huge mixed-use (retail and office) development by Gould Development.
  • 500-504 I Street, NW, HPA #06-368, signs
500 I St is the site of the church that was recently bought by the Chinese Community Church of Washington. We assume that they will be adding some signs to the new church.
  • 720 7th Street, NW, HPA #06-439, automatic teller machine and signag[e]
The ATM is going to be to the left of the La Tasca restaurant (722 7th St NW) on 7th street. This is a good location for an ATM – in the middle of a concentration of restaurants on 7th St and also next to the soon-to-be Bedrock billiards establishment (714 7th St NW).

In somewhat related news…it looks like Yeni Wong is having some trouble getting CVS to move out!

In other neighborhood changes, Eye street between 7th and 9th was converted from a on way to a two way street over the weekend by the DC Department of Transportation. This happened without warning according to Akridge in a memo to its Techworld tenants.

Probably best to be extra alert while folks are getting used to the change.

thanks for the news on 500 eye street. we knew something was up with all fixing up that’s been going on. maybe they’ll get rid of the perma-stone and restore some dignity to the bldg.

the great glass wall of chinatown, dc will soon appear thereby creating a new boundary for chinatown. make sure it doesnt extend noth of massachusetts avenue. then it wouldnt be chinatown would it? i hate this glass wall and it’s a monster to look at. there’s noting Asian about it. thanks to ANC2C for screwing up the chinatown neighborhood.
