Holy crap, Waffle Shop is going to be razed?
I wish I had discovered it sooner…I only happened upon it last month during the Japan festival downtown.
That is seriously the only good diner I’ve found in the district. Good greasy food, inexpensive, and authentic. I refuse to eat at The Diner in Adams Morgan. I’m from South Jersey originally, and know a fake diner when I see one.
Any suggestions on other authentic diners in DC? I will need to get my fix when Waffle Shop is no more.
RIP Waffle House.
try Petes or Jimmy Ts both in Cap Hill
DC really sucks for diners…ARE YOU LISTENING CITY VISTA??? JEMAL???
I hope someone steps in and saves the neon sign. I will contact some local neon artists and the BID and Jemal’s office to see if it can be set aside.
Try the Florida Avenue Grill at 13th and Florida NW. It’s a real authentic diner and Si’s right, there ain’t many left in the old city.
I thought Jemal had to preserve the exterior facade of Waffle Shop? Or maybe he’s just in a position where he can ignore those sorts of things.
1) I don’t think Jemal has to preserve the facade, because I don’t think it is technically historic. However I believe he proposed leaving a portion of it in the new building. Raze can mean to take down the build, except for the facade, which he has done to many builds including some incredible work on F street just around the corner. Anyone who complains about his work doesn’t realize how good it is, especially compared to the cheap work many other developers are doing(i.e. JBG).
2) I agree, the Florida Avenue Grill, at 11TH and Florida (not 13th) is an authentic diner, far more so than the waffle shop. The food is far better as well.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I know it’s been discussed numerous times, but I was really hoping the Waffle Shop wouldn’t be torn down.
