History on Foot: The Willard
On a recent walk, we noticed this plaque recognizing one of many significant historic events to occur at The Willard Hotel (1401 Penn. Ave., NW). This is the location where Julia Ward Howe, after meeting with President Lincoln in November 1861, is said to have written “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” This is her best known work, but Howe was a prominent American Abolitionist, social activist and poet.
