Is The Verizon Center Changing Its Name Soon? (601 F St NW)
A story in the Washington Business Journal describes some domain name sleuthing revealing a host of domain names being scooped up with the words “arena”, “center”, and “dc” in them. The difference between the current arena’s name, the Verizon Center, and the scooped up names is that they are prefixed with one or more variations of Capital One, the retail bank headquartered in McLean, Virginia (Tysons Corner). The naming rights for the Verizon Center end in 2018 so they’re up for renewal soon.
If this renaming does happen, the city’s main arena will go back to being named almost as it was when the arena that housed the Capitals (ice hockey) and Bullets (basketball) stood in Landover, Maryland. The difference is that the old arena was named the Capital Centre, using the British spelling. We never quite knew why that was.
