Jazz In The Garden, Redux

Posted by Columbo
July 5, 2007

Yeah we blogged about this last year, but it’s such a good event we feel it warrants more publicity. Every Friday night you can listen to live Jazz in a beautiful setting, outside in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.

The band is situated under a tent, between the pavilion and the fountain pool. Folks gather around and converge on every available spot.

They sell wine, beer, and sangria. They might even do mixed drinks, but I can’t say for sure. You can also get food, I’ve seen BBQ sandwiches, spinach & artichoke dip, and other items for sale. Many people bring their own food, some bring coolers with a full picnic. You’re technically (legally) not allowed to bring in alcohol, but I’ve seen plenty of people opening their own bottles of wine.

No area is off limits, folks set up on the grass and underneath just about every work of art.

During band breaks, the fountain jets are turned back on (they start on full blast, usually frightening whomever is sitting on the fountain edge), making for a picture perfect evening.

This can be a nice adult evening and is one of our favorite things to do.

However, beware of the “stroller crowd”, as you can be surrounded. If there is one near you, more will come.
They tend to come and let the little ones run everywhere, and the noise can often drown out the music we all came to hear.

We often bring our own beverage in disguise and have no problems.

I plan on going tomorrow with my stroller. just giving everyone fair warning.

They do serve mixed drinks.

Also, it appears that the south side of the garden tends to have less of the stroller crowd, if it bothers you.

I was going to bring my dad to this last Friday, when he was in town visiting. He declined however, when we found out they were playing big-band music. Apparently no self-respecting modern jazz enthusiast likes big-band music.

Now I know…lol

these afternoons are a lot of fun to share with friends and family. I’ve never had any trouble bringing my own tasty beverages to the event.

Chris: Have you ever tried HR-57?
